My 80GB has like 5 or 6GB free left. I was going to get a 100+GB Western Digital SATA drive. I noticed they are a good amount of money more expensive than IDE. I was thinking of going for a 120GB but then saw larger ones like 300GB. Which size do you recommend getting? I will use my old 80GB IDE drive as a "C" drive for programs/apps. The new SATA one I am getting is for all of my media files. Also a quick retailer question. I have always bought compute rparts from NewEgg. Are there better places for hard drives? Should I consider getting something off eBay?
 
160GB Hitachi SATA, at a little over $90, is actually only a couple dollars more than the 120GB, on ZZF. TigerDirect still has a 200GB Seagate for $99.97, that was posted on HotDeals awhile back. I don't recommend the Egg for hard drives - ZZF and HyperMicro pack them better. However, Newegg does still have stellar service if a return is necessary, and are still a great place to buy everything else.

Drives bigger than 250GB tend to come at a premium per GB, as they are newer technology with some investment in R&D.

Also, if your 80GB drive is very old, the new drive you will get will likely be a faster boot drive, especially if you pick up a Hitachi or 16MB Maxtor.
 
Generally one step below the top is the best deal. Right now that would be 300GB. No need for a big buffer for media files, so the Hitachi or Seagate should do you just fine.

They don't have Fry's where you are, so don't know where you'd find a deal.
 
I wasn't even thinking of cache. I searched for all 8MB cache. Are ZZF and HyperMicro that reputable? I haven't heard of them. What else are some good companies for hard drives? So you don't think a 16MB cache will benefit me here? Should I just go for it now for future purposes?
 
I'd go for a 250GB.
And ZZF is the best place for hard drives IMO cause they pack them a lot a better then newegg.
 
I am liking the 250GB Western Digital. Should I get something besides WD?

RAID is a mixed bag of potential, promises, pitfalls, on occasion performance, and usually, problems. Read up on it if you want to learn more - there were several impassioned debates about it in this forum recently that you can search for. If you want to learn more about it, Google for an introduction to it to get a grasp of the basic concepts and feel free to ask away with any more specific questions you may have on implementation/best practices/gotchas.

I'm sorry that this response is so vague, but there is good info on the basics of RAID that is presented far better than I can here.

Thanks. I don't think it is for me since there are mixed opnions on it. How would one go about installing SATA drive in a RAID array? Let's say I install my two SATA drives. It isn't possible for me to "accidentally" raid them right?
