Well a friend of mine has a Dimension 4600 desktop with a bad powersupply.

My question is what will fit in its place.

I meausered the powersupply that is in there and it is roufly 6 x 5 1\2 x 3 .

I was going to order just ATX powersupply with P4 support but i thought i should check first i would hate to order wrong.

WARNING: My information might be old but I have read that DELL POWERSUPPLIES aren't standard ATX and will DAMAGE a Regular PSU as well as the system. There might be ways to modify a PSU to work with a dell system but check the web for more information.

I haven't measured my regular PSUs so I can't tell you about size

Thus the reason i would never have a computer that i didnt build myself...BUT, before you go buy another one, open the current one up and see if its just a blown fuse...if it is, then swap it and hope for the best. if it isnt..then get another one, check on ebay, or ubid or something for another dell psu..if worse somes to worst then try buy a regular psu and set it side by side with the other one, and whip out the dremmel! :)

luck

Some of the Dell models did have the power circuitry arranged differently so that if you used a standard ATX PSU you'd fry something. Don't know the specifics offhand but doing a search for say Dell PSU you'd find a lot of info I'm sure.

Dont open PSUs. They do carry enough charge in the CAPs to stop your heart if it all discharges into your skin. Just a warning.

thought the only way to stop ones heart is to have the electricity going through it (ie, hand to foot, hand the hand, or head the foot. i opened it, without paying attention to the caps (not a good idea mind you) didnt get zapped, and didnt have a problem taping the whole thing, and painting part of it. but as i said before, as long as i used one hand in the process, i dont think a minor burn would kill me...again, i guess it was a bad idea to play around with it without discharging it

don't worry i don't plan on opening any psu that is not mine

if it was mine would open it up, I am an EE student that loves to take apart anything and try and fix, but since it not my computer nor do i wish to spend that much time on a comp that is not mine i am just going to spend there money to get a new one :p
