As much as I love the windows 7 maximize to left/right half of the screen command, I really miss the ability to have additional screen space to put something to the side while having another app maximized.

IE, working in 3d modeling, the apps I use are best maximized to help with toolbar layout, if I'm using kmplayer or something I can set video to be on top, but for youtube/netflix streaming theres nothing I can do.

My q is, what size monitor do I need that will match up approx 1:1 with the left or right edge of my 3007wfp-hc? doesnt need to be huge (smaller is better infact)-im thinking an older 4:3 1600x1200 lcd rotated to portrait, or even a 16:10/9 1680x1050 in portrait mode...

anyone have a setup like this? what size (20" 4:3? 20,22" 16:10/9?) would work best for this?

Not looking for eyefinity, just would like an extra space for work

20" 4:3 1600x1200 is the best fit.
20" 16:10 1680x1050 is a pretty close fit but not as good as the 4:3 option.

4:3 20" on the left and 16:10 20" on the right.

You probably want a *VA or IPS monitor since you will be running it in portrait and the vertical view-angles of a TN panel are poor.
(popular choice is 2007FP (left on image above), but it's expensive / hard to get by)

so your 2007fp does not fit exactly with the height of the 3008wfp on the side?

i thought they would fit the same way a 2007fp & 3007wfp fits.

Not exactly.

Unfortunately the displays are off in the picture so it can be a bit hard to see how the panels are aligned. I haven't aligned them perfectly though and since the 3008WFP has a thicker bezel it looks worse than it is.

But no, the match isn't *perfect*. I tried to measure the difference and the panel of the 2007FP seems to be about ~4 mm taller (portrait) than the 3008WFP, så thats ~2 mm on both ends if you align it perfectly.

Going from this picture I'd say that the same applies to the 3007WFP (the 2007FP is a litle bit taller):

In windows though I don't think about it at all, the bezel is large enough to make the imperfections disappear completely in my eyes. The (wide) 2007WFP (on the right in my setup) though is a bit disappointing in contrast. The pixel density isn't the same and it is quite a bit taller (relative) so it sticks out immediately if you have something that spans over the edge.

Perhaps not a big deal and you don't think about it as long as you avoid spanning things (which I tend to avoid anyway :)). But in my opinion the 20+30+20 setup is the ultimate setup so if I get a decent deal I'd snatch another 2007FP just to get it as close to perfection as possible :)
And I guess it would be nice if I were to game on all three as well, doesn't work that well with my current graphic card situation though. I don't game much though so it's no big deal for me.

But the 3007WFP + 2007FP setup is a bit more aesthetically appealing since they have the same type of bezel.
