Hey guys -

I hAve posted a few threads now on Raid 5 type guestions. After posting on storage review, they seemed to steer me away from Raid 5 for my main desktop use.

So what do you guys suggest?

Should i run raid-5 on my main system? I use this system for majority of gaming, then normal every day type school stuff.

I would love to save the money and not go raid, im just concerned about reliability and i hate having 2 drive letters.

So what do you guys think i should do?

Raid type setup vs traditional drives?

I could just get a Raptor, although i hate them, and then get a 400-500gig storage drive, and when i need more add it. But i just hate seeing the drive letters. I wish their was a way to combine the 2 drives, but not run the risk of Raid 0.
 
best setup for a desktop/gamming system is a nice fast boot drive like a Raptor. Then a second high capacity drive for storage/data.

If you need some redundancy for your storage drive then you might get a second drive and run it RAID 1, but I find it best to burn off any data I like to keep on DVD or with an external USB/firewire drive...
 
is their anything besides a raptor for the speed? i just cant see spending close to 200 bucks on 73gigs.

whats a good large storage drive? that hitachi? or are the seagates good?
 
The raptor is holding a narrowing margin against Hitachi and WD. The GB/$ leader is Maxtor (my favorite, of course :rolleyes: ). Seagate has quiet disks, but Samsung is quieter, and the seek performance of the Seagate is remarkably bad.

There's the $3.95 tour. Souvenir stand's that way.

 
Raptor is it for the speed, thats why they cost so high, you can prolly do a lower capacity drive of the ones below, but would not be quite the same performance...

As for storage the hiachi 2k500 is a very nice drive, or one of the seagate 7200.9 series. The WD Caviar SE16 series is not to bad. but is not as good as the two above in performance...
 
Okay i have read alot of reviews, and decided that 400gig models are the way to go. A 400 gig harddrive is about 200 bucks. A 500 is about 350. So an extra 150 bucks for 100gigs just isnt worth it. I can almost get 2 400s for the price of the Hitachi 500.

Anyways, reading the forums and storage reviews, i believe i want 16mb cache, as it always shows a performance increase.

WIth that said, i really only have a few options, Western Digital with 16mb cache or WD RE.

Buy the non-raid edition. The error correction is (intentionally) crippled on the RE drives. The reason is that raid controllers do the error correction themselves, and while the drives try to do it they're non-responsive, so if the drive did the error recovery, it could make the whole array stall while it did its thing.
