As im heading off to college i figured its time to get a better monitor. Im thinking of a 17" lcd with a response time below 20ms to be able to play games like wow and halflife 2. My dad recomends me to get a dell Ultra Sharp 1704fp but this has a 25ms response time and that doesnt mix well with games. I can get this for about $275. Ive looked on newegg and saw the Samsung 710N for $200 with a 16ms response time and ViewSonic VP171B-2 with a 8ms response time for 320$. my budget is below 300 so dont want to break that. Any help woul dbe good.

if you can squeeze out that extra bit for the viewsonic, i think that would be perfect. It's got a lot of nice features compared to the 710N. Check out some of the Planars. My friend has one (19") and it looks great in WoW. No ghosting and very little blurring. Can't speak for it's performance in HL2 but I'd imagine it wouldn't be bad at all.

Do you know if that 710N is worth the price or am i getting what im paying for? Ive seen some positive things being said about it on this forum and others.

i don't know personally, but i've heard nothing against the 710N. That would be a safe bet for you.
