What should I do with this system?

Celeron 666mhz
64mb RAM
i810 chipset (onboard sound, video)
3com 3CR990-TX97 NIC
48x CD-ROM
20gb hdd
floppy

I got it today for free...and while I was thinking about using it for a file server, I really don't need it, as my primary system makes a better file server. (plus, all my files are on it)

Folding isn't an option, as I don't want to hold onto it just to fold. A Linux/other OS box doesn't work out that well, as I can just use Virtual PC for my needs.

I'm thinking of just selling it, but I don't know anyone who'd want a low end system such as this....at least at a rate where I'd make anything worthwhile off of it.

thoughts?

Could always donate to a good cause or a needy family. I am sure someone in the FS forum would buy it at a good price.

Dumpster?
No really...if you give it away, they'll expect you to fix it. (do you realy want work on a celery 666 with 64MB RAM?) It's barely folding material and you can't think of a use for it.
Put a sign on it that says "free to a good home" and put it on the curb.
Now it's somebody else's problem.

web / ftp server

i use a old p2 as my webserver

233mhz P2
384mb ram
80gb hard drive
jaton 8mb agp video card
32x cd rom
windows xp
easy php (my sql, apache and php)
cerberus ftp server
and sometimes a shout cast stream

I also vote for web/ftp server.
You could also use it as media center you can have a tivo and mp3 jukebox.

I'm sure it is heavy enough to hold doors open in a brisk wind...or paper down for that matter :D

Seriously, if you don't want it, donate it to charity. You can get the write-off on your taxes at some inflated price (like $300 or something) and the charity gets to sell it to some low-income household or use it for office purposes.

my p3 800 is beefed up with 512mb of pc133 and it serves games at my lans

and is a test box for testing hardware (format and test hds, cards, all that good stuff)

thats my vote, test rig

Mate, look at my system. <B>IT'S</B> low end...
You could make some sort of server out of it, but you will nedd to buy more RAM. Option two is to donate it to charity, or donate it to a program that provides computers to the elderly/the disadvanted etc. As Buckus said, you can get it back on your tax. And you've done a nice deed :)
If you look at the server option, you will need more RAM, and possibly a bit more speed (OC it). The lack of a decent size L2 cache means that megahertz alone will make the overall speed better, something you need with a server.
Hope this helps...

donate it to charity (seriosly there are those in need such as students of famileis with low income) and write off it's value on your taxes

I say this cause I used to take donated computers and parts and get them to people and places in need.

For what it's worth, the system just got a healthy kick.

256mb RAM, and an additional 6gb hdd (which I'll run as the OS; the 20gb storage).

Now, the system shaps out like this:
Celeron 666
256mb RAM
6.4gb 5400rpm UDMA33 hdd
20gb 4200rpm UDMA66 hdd
3com NIC
onboard sound & video
floppy
52x CD-ROM

I think the system might be worth keeping now...use it as a TeamSpeak Server, Norton Antivirus Server, etc.

Problem is....I'm not sure which OS to run on it.

XP Pro, 2000 Server, or 2003 Server. No matter which one it is, I'll strip it down, remove eye candy, etc. It'll run headless 99% of the time...and I'll just use TightVNC to log into it.

Any suggestions? the 2003 Server I could do as the 180 day eval I got from school, or I could use the legit version.

XP is the easiest to deal with....2000's old but reliable.
