What should I do? (Upgrading)

I have decided it is time to upgrade. My current specs are:

Athlon XP 1800+ OCed to 2000+
Shuttle AK35GTR mobo
256 MB ram
Radeon 8500

I am wondering whether I should upgrade the motherboard and cpu first or if I should upgrade the video card and ram. If I upgrade my cpu, I'll probably go for an Athlon 64. If I upgrade my video card, I might go for a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Nvidia 6800, or 6800 GT...or any other card you'd suggest. Right now the card would depend on how much money I can come up with and how much patience I have. So, what are your suggestions? Thanks.

Honestly, I would upgrade the chip and motherboard first. If you get a new vid card, the processor would become too much of a bottleneck. I would go the Athlon64/new mobo pathand get more RAM, and then upgrade the vid card when you have the money. I would look at the 6800 if loking at the vid card; it is by far the fastest card on the market. Although if you upgrade the chip/mobo and look at a vid card later, it might change.

If you do decide to upgrade the chip to the Athon64, look at the socket 754 chips. They are the cheapest 64-bit Athlons on the market ( http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-483&depa=1 gives a good chip - the 3200+ ). As for the mobo, I recommend the ASUS boards - they offer heaps of features with great reliability. And upgrade the RAM to at least 512MB, or 1GB if you can afford it.

Those are just my recommendations. Basically the chip upgrade will give you a huge boost and set you up for the future. If you buy a new vid card now for your current system that processor will be too much of a bottleneck.

second the opinion above... you need new chip/mobo... that vid card is still servicable (though slow)... but you would gain nothing by upgrading anything other than the chip/mobo... so start there for step one... btw... i highly recommend the A64 3800+... if you got the cash... it has absolutel blown my mind..

Yeah cip and mobo right, probablly the A64 socket 754 is your best bang for buck route right now. 939 is too expensive.

Thanks for the input. That's exactly what I was thinking, I just like hearing what others have to say before I go and purchase something. I'll probably be able to spend at min $250 and at most $400, so I think I'll be looking at the lower end A64s. Time to start researching.
