So I am leaving for college within the next couple months and I am looking to buy a laptop. Nothing too amazing, but def a quality machine. I am thinking I will want:

core 2 duo
2 gb ram
Decent gfx card, if i decide to play a game or two
15.4 screen with best possible resolution

Now I know i can find this with different companies...
I have been looking at:

Acer
Asus
Dell
HP

Any input would be great.
Thanks!

What is your buget? I think you should go with ASUS, look at the Z96J (barebones so you can build it like you want)

im looking at usa.asus.com is that the right place to get a asus laptop? or is there somewhere else?
also i went to the reseller part on their site, and on the sites they list...i cant find one that'll let me customize it

k..i found one that lets me customize..but is it just me, or was i wrong to assume they would be cheaper?

Asus laptops tend to be more expensive then other companies, however I personally believe they're some of the best laptops out there in terms of quality of design/build.

How much are you looking to spend?

I was thinking ASUS too, i dont want to spend more $1600. I think Ram is the biggest thing for me, I am spoiled with 2 gigs on my home computer and scared to downgrade. ASUS alot better than Acer? What about support?

Thanks guys!

PS. Sasiki, I took a look at that one you have, I like it, have you had any problems with it at all? I have never had a laptop, so I am pretty unsure of everything, used to building my home machines, I really appreciate all the help I can get.

For what you're looking for, I don't think it really matters.

In terms of support, I'd rank Asus and Acer the same. But that's just me.

I think the the Asus A8JP is really the kind of computer you should be looking at. Throw another gig of RAM in it, and you really don't have much to complain about. Just realize it's a 14" screen though.

i dont mean to hijack the original poster...but im lookin to spend about $900 max(before taxes and shipping) i dont need anything amazing. i know i want a core2 duo just so i know the processor lasts and a 15" screen a 14" is toooo small......its mainly gonna be used while im recovering from back surgery..ill be in the hospital a week, and then be on limited sitting...more laying down...so its gonna be mostly for browsing, irc, and maybe some light gaming..but mostly browsing

Thanks EQTakeOffense, I just took a look at the A8JP and love it, looks perfect for my needs really. I am going to be going from my 20.1 monitor to that, which does scare me, but it also means it will be a hell of alot lighter and more mobile. Plus with a good resolution, I think i might live.

I'd look at Acer's offering. They offer some very decent computers for relatively cheap. You wont be able to do any gaming on them unless it's Diablo 2 or older 'classic' games.

Something like this is what I'd recomend.

Edit: I'd also look in local BB/CC ads. I know they occasionally have really good deals on laptops, after mail in rebates though.

No problems at all. It's light, fast, decent gaming, has DVI and VGA out. Here are 2 great resources for the A8Jp. One is a review, the other is a dedicated thread to the A8Jp. The review has the 3dmarks and such. CS:Source, Guild Wars, etc. play flawlessly on it. I used to use a desktop at work and go back and forth between the laptop. I now use just the laptop hooked up to an external monitor and key/mouse. It's great. It has the core 2 with 4mb cache also. You will find all the info you need on it though in the 2 following links.

QFT I'm on my 4th Asus laptop and I"ve had zero problems with them, very high quality and are ALOT better looking than most of the other notebooks around.

Just purchased an open boxed g1 from newegg today myself!

Fingers crossed for a nice one!

HOLY CRAPSICKLES

It was delivered today, I ordered it yesterday!

Can't wait to get home from work!

.......

Everything looks great except:

Box a little beat up, Drivers CD is scratched from sitting loose, there is no backpack. No dead pixels and the laptop is in perfect shape, I think it's a keeper!
