What should I build?

I'm looking to build a small form factor computer for my girlfriend for our anniversary. I have a budget of about $500-600 or so, not including the monitor(Samsung 940BW) and the case (Ultra MicroFly) which I already have. She's looking to do some video editing/DVD encoding, photo editing, and some light/medium gaming. Any suggestions and/or comments would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My first suggestion is to not do it. If you want to spend 500-600 on your girlfriend (already a bad idea but lets go with it) then buy her jewelry. Tiffanys.com is a good place to start.

Buying a computer would be like buying her a new stove....could result in a slap to the face.

Thank you for the relationship advice, but she already told me she wanted a computer, so I'm pretty sure I won't be getting slapped.

Perhaps she was saying jewelry but you heard computer :p.

Since she's doing video encoding mostly a C2D system would suit her nicely. E6300 w/ an Asus P5B-VM with some quality RAM (2 GB is preferable) and some mid end ~$100 video card would work well. Maybe a 7600GT?

7600GT + C2D E6300 + P5B + 2Gig RAM (1Gig at the VERY least)

Game set, match, You.

(You could probably skimp and get a cheaper card depending on what she is playing, it's subjective but the 7600GT is the the killer card for under $150.)

No doubt this is what happened. This is how this conversation went down:

boy: What would you like for Christmas honey?
girl: Oh I dunno...whatever you think is good. (not this is a lie)
boy: Well I noticed you have a bad computer. I could build you one if you like
girl: oh, that sounds like a great idea! (also a lie)
boy: great! Did you have any other ideas?
girl: No just go with what you think is good.

In the mean time the girl really wants something to show off to her girlfriends because a girls measurement to her friends is what crap she can show off while the guys measurement is his girlfriend. Its science.
