Ok, i'm building a new machine and it's acctually my first, so i went to a computer store i was like a kid in a candy store and this is what i have got so far

Thermaltake Tsunami Dream black w/window
DFI Lanparty NF4-Ultra D
NEC 3520A Dual Layer DVD Burner
OCZ modstream 520 Watts

I have left a down payment on the following items since they were not available

AMD FX-55
ATI Radeon X850XT PE

now what left are the HDD and the RAM coz i decided to get these when the time comes to put it together. the HDD the i have choosen was the Maxtor 300GB 16MB cache SATA and the RAM was OCZ 2X512 Platnium Enhanced latency (couldn't find the REV2 anywhere :( )

But recently, amd price drop was announced and the 3800+ is a lot cheaper. it running for 529-550 dollars canadian, while the fx 55 is running for 1060 canadian.

now the question is shall i go for the 3800+ or wait for the fx 55.
and if i was to go for the amd 3800+, where should the rest of the money go. shall i go raid 0 with 2 WD raptors, or boost ram to 2 gb

If you want to save money get the 3500+. Its only 200mhz shy of the 3800+. You can easily clock the 3500+ to 2.6ghz which is the rated speed of the FX-55, just missing the little extra Cache. The 3500+ goes for around $280 American.

If you get the 3500+, you could get/do both of the things you wanted, Ram @ 2gig and the 2 Raptors ^_^.

the thing is i'm not looking to save money, i just want to know if there will be a lot of performance difference between them at default clock speeds

I'm running the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ With 768 megs of ram and a Radeon 9800 Pro. I always use games on the source engine as my personal benchmark. I never drop below 60 fps in css or hl2. If your looking for raw speed, you need to concentrate your funds into the proc and ram for the time. What exactly are you going to use such a powerhouse for anyway? ;)

If money isn't an object, why are you going with an FX-55 but not Raptor hard drives?

I was considering the FX series, but I couldn't justify the difference in cost vs. performance. In games, the results are pretty close - which is primarily what I'm doing. Some light video editing and some music editing - but not primarily.

The overclocking issue isn't really an issue because - as i understand it - the FX series doesn't have the same OC'ing ceiling as, say, a 3500 - so to say that a 3500 can be oc'd to FX levels is miselading, isn't it? So apples to oranges as far as I am concerned.

With the Valentine's Day drop, I decided to go with the 3800 since the price dropped - that enables me to get 3 hard drives and a RAID 5 3ware controller. That means more to me than the perfomance gain from the processor jump to the FX.

OK this is what i have decided to
since the lack of FX 55 i decided to go with the 4000+ i foundt it for $800 CAD, and since ATI cancelled my order for X850XT PE, i'm going to settle with the X850XT Sapphire

now the only reason i didn't go with raptors is that storage is an issue in my case
but to be honest, i was thinking to go with 2raptors but then again when i went to my friends house didn't c much difference in loading time

the only benefit u will get from these raptors in when zipping/unzipping or loading time which is really that much of a difference

i have a setup similar to yours i just built and it was my first rig as well

asus A8N mobo
amd fx-55
2 gig corsair low latency ram
gefore 6800 ultra pci-e
soundblaster audigy 4 pro
two 74 gig raptors in Raid 0
1 250gig WD sata HDD
enermax 600 watt psu
sony dvd rom
plextor plexwriter premium 52x
plextor px7165A sata dvd burner

Any help you need with how these things perform or whatever just let me know, i love this system, it amazes me more and more everyday. I'm burning a dvd right now, talking to my girlfriend on msn, running mIRC, Aim, and surfing the internet all at the same time, with an antivirus prog going :D

Makave7i Tha Don, i just wanna know what u think of the raptors
and oh how is 2 gigs of ram running, i heard from so mnay ppl that there wont be much of a performance difference going to 2 gigs and 1 gig is fine
i also heard, and someone plz confirm this, that using all the 4 dimm slots for the RAM on an AMD board will run the memory at DDR333 and not at DDR400.

the raptors are running great. i don't know why anyone would say these are loud, i can't even hear them. 2 gigs of ram is running great for me, but i guess i've never ran just 1 gig, so i can't compair 1 to 2.

If you can't hear the Raptors it doesn't mean they're not loud, it means your system is just louder. ;)

I've got a Shuttle and my Raptors are the second loudest thing in it after the BFG 6800 GT OC (with its ridiculously stupid cooler).

r raptors really that loud
i thought only scsii 15000 rpm were loud
and that the raptors were just as loud as the 7200rpm drive

the older raptors has noisy bearings.. seems that it's been fixed and the drives are much quieter now

built my machine finally
aaaaaaaaaah
so orgasmic
