What scanner would you recommend?

Hey guys,
My HP ScanJet 4300C just burned up a couple days ago. I got home from school and my computer said it had an unrecognized USB device shown and I didn't think anything of it. I came back about two hours later and I smell this really bad burning smell....I open up my scanner lid and the light is on and it was almost getting ready to smoke! So....it's out of warranty, and I need your recommendation on what a good scanner is that's the best bang for the buck. The max I'm looking to spend is around $100.

I think it's the Hewlett Packard 3970C, it's $100.

Though depending on how large the dpi you want, you can spend around $60-70 for a Canon Canoscan 600 something or an HP 3500 something (sorry for not being descriptive, can't really remember the numbers).
 
Pick whatever Canon or Epson you can afford. The Canon LiDE scanners are very thin and do a good job. After my recent experience with HP scanners I have to surmise they're not makin them like they used to.
 
the epson perfection series are very good.

I got the 2400 for my grilfriend for her birthday, beats my hp 4400c, and both of our old umax scanners (a 1200s and 2400s).

Basically, I've seen the epson perfection series recommended a LOT by people who use them every day to do graphics, and after trying one, I can't say I disagree now that they have USB2.0 interfaces.

scanning speed is good, and visual quality is very good.
