What resolution do DVD's play at?

If your monitor is labelled as "720p", it cannot do 1080p.
Though Blu-ray and HD-DVD are capable of playing at 720p, only 1080p content has been released. Both formats include 480p versions on the same disk.
XBox 360 and Playstation 3 games, with few exceptions, are 720p. Almost all HDTV is 720p.
As for how big a difference there is between 720p and 1080p, it depends on the size of your display and how far you are sitting. The closer you get to 40", the more you are going to want 1080p. If you are sitting a few feet away from a 720p 30" display, I doubt you'd notice much of a difference between the two resolutions.
