What replacement card would performance-match this setup?

I've got to replace my 2 X 6970 cards with a single current-gen card due to a PCI-E slot failure on my mobo. Can anyone tell me what is going to give equivalent performance from the current AMD and GeForce lines? I don't want to go backwards, in fact I'd prefer something giving better performance. Tom's charts are useless for this comparison since they change benchmarks annually.

A single 280X / 7970 GHz is about the equivalent of 6970 Crossfire. I would go with an R9 290. You can pick up a new one for under $300 US right now, and it's not that much more expensive than the R9 285 that replaced the 280X in the product line.

On the NVIDIA side it's probably the GTX 960 or GTX 770 that is the equivalent.

The R9 290 is still the best deal.

I'd go 290. This is coming from a 7970/280x owner. My card is good but you are going to want the extra power.

The 6970 in crossfire is a pretty powerful setup roughly equal to the 6990. You will want a high end card to beat the performance of your current setup like the 980. A 290x is a fantastic card for the money these days at around $300 as well

Here is a comparison of the 6990 vs the 290x:
