So now that i have my new computer my old computer is just sitting around, so im thinking of making it my "data center" where i can just download stuff to, archive, and just save a bunch of stuff too. Now along with that ill be wanting at least a terrabyte of space, so a raid 1, or 10 wouldnt really be in my interest. Raid 0 i dont believe would suit my purpose due to the number of drives ill have. So i end up with raid 5.....seems to be my best bet.......Can some one help me out, thanks!

If you are just making this for a download, archive, storage center than RAID 0 is not the way you want to go, RAID 0 just makes all hard drives appear as one, so if one crashes, ALL data is lost. RAID 0

RAID 1 is just a mirror of your hard drive, good for your OS so if one drives fails, you still have another one with ALL of your settings in the OS. RAID 1

RAID 10 is a combo of both RAID 0 and RAID 1, it gives you speed AND keeps your data mirrored but you need 4 disk and actually only can use 2 of them. So if you have 4 x 250s, you can only use 500gb. RAID 10

RAID 5 is the more popular RAID and it is one that if one drives fails, you still have your data, you just need to rebuild your RAID with a new disk, so having a drive either sitting in your system or laying around to swap in quickly is a good idea and the best method for a storage server, since you only lose 1 hard drive regardless of how many you purchase. So you buy 10 drives, you can use 9 of them. RAID 5

RAID 6 is just like RAID 5 but you can lose 2 disks with it and still be running, just now if you have 10 drives, you can use 8 of them. RAID 6

Note that with any sort of RAID, your capacity is generally a function of the number of disks you have and the size of the smallest disk. So if you've got several 300GB disks around, one 500, and one 80, RAID will treat them as all being 80 GB. Thus, you'll probably want to leave any smaller disks you've got around out of the equation. You could also create a separate array out of the small ones, if you've got enough room on your controller.

ya what ^ said, if you drive sizes don't match then raid is bad idea cuz you will be loosing space. If you just want the drives to show up as single partition you could use jbod.
