What R9800 pro runs coolest?

I was wondering if anyone had a card in mind that runs without melting cables that touch it? I had a Sapphire OEM R9800pro card that produced heat i could feel through my case's side panel. (Returned to newegg, and they gave me a refund. Awesome.)

Please don't suggest the XT, cost is too high.
Also not a 2-slot designed card, as it will not fit in my case.
If it blocks another card slot, it is ok, but I need the slot's face for a cable header.

Are you doing this in a shuttle?

Any 9800 will run too hot, unless you mod the case to have some airflow in the area.

I'm not sure of the exact power consumption of a 9800P. The 9700P was 54 watts and a 9800XT is 74 watts. So the 9800P is definitely up there.

The short answer is that all that heat has to go somewhere, and without an exhaust fan in the immediate vicinity it will go into melting your cables.

Nvidia's cards are even warmer. So without good ventilation, about the best you can do is a R9600P or XT.

I agree with the above poster ... the 9600 pro is probably the coolest card right now with decent performance ...

I ran a 9700 with in a shuttle with no extra ventilation, no problems what so ever. I didnt overclock anything though.

9800's are faster and brawnier.

I'd suggest putting an exhaust fan or at least some vent holes in the immediate area of the GPU.

It's in this case

with a shuttle MN31N micro-ATX board.
I have some slots, but they are all being used with headers for the built-in stuff on the mobo and a tv-tuner to be purchased soon.

I had the cheapest R9800pro made by Sapphire. I didn't actually damage anything, but it was certainly worrysome that I would, with everything packed in so close.

After looking around I decided on a card. Based on benchmarks, price, and the chance-of-killing-system percentage, I chose to get a R9700 Pro.

So here is my next issue:
What's the best way to cut out some holes for cable headers?
