Just wondering what the best file compression software is ?
I've always used winrar but need something that compresses files the most...

I'm looking to back up 6 gigabytes of photos onto a 4.7GB DVD.
But I'm starting think I should just buy a DL-DVD instead.

Thanks for your time,

Gonna give Stuff-It a try since it's an add on my file compression text above. :p

7-Zip is generally the best but takes a longer to compress.

Also, can you use a regular font color? It's very difficult to read grey on black text.

Isn't your sig used with gray text ???

Can you read that ???

Confusing...

I can read my text so easy that I'm confused as to what
some peoples' problem is with me using gray text ???

Someone needs to take a picture of their screen the way
they constantly see it cause mine looks fine.

It's really starting to annoy me.

There is no best application for archiving files. The application itself isn't the only factor that you should take into contemplation. You should consider the file format as well. Some compressors are better than others on different files and vice versa.

I typically use 7-Zip and IZARC.

For general data files 7-zip is a bit better than rar, which is better than zip.
For pictures though, your best option would be to resize them down a little bit - say from 800x600 to 640x480. jpg images are already compressed, so can't be compressed much further, maybe 1-2%.
For images, jpeg compression is generally better than even 7-zip because it's lossy so discards some unneeded data. Taking the same uncompressed bitmap file, you can get a smaller file by converting it to a jpeg and still have it look almost as good as the larger zip/rar/7zip.

And your grey text sucks ass, I can barely read it on my lcd.

the sig in grey is a setting of the forums, not people's choice

and your font is not hard to read, but can be strenous more so then a brighter text.

what format are your images in?

as saw, jpeg is already compressed to hell, so you wont get much out of it.

DVD's are so cheap juct burn 2 dvd's of pics as is.

The problem is that everything is grey. Your text is only a little brighter than the background, and signatures are about the same hue.

Yours is faint and requires some effort to focus and read. White is good because it stands out against the dark grey background.

Of course, if it looks good to you, chances are my picture will too :p

Makes the most sense, I did want to keep them all on one disc,
but I had forgotten that you can't compress images that much...

I'll just burn two DVD's or buy a Dual-Layer Disc...

Thanks for your time though people.

Here's an Idea: USE TWO DISCS!!!!

God damn grey text bastard.

Those are the god-damn same things on the internet. Silver implies shine, which isn't going to happen regularly for a font.

What's wrong with white? I like the color grey myself. It's one of my favorites. It just isn't suitable here.

But yet they use it for our sigs ???
I haven't seen all these same people bitching to the admins about their gray sigs???
People, F**K WHITE

I like using gray text, if you don't like it. __ ____ yourself...
Or change your LCD settings... LOL

Are you able to view this text?
After reading his other posts, he claims to want to be different.

Yes, I can. It was hard to read though.
Are you implying that gray is even close to that hard to read???
Because I would call you an idiot. You can all read each others sigs can't you ???

And why point out something I said to try and do what exactly ???
I have one for you.I'll quit using gray text if you all quit using your sigs...

Hypocrite.

Signatures are grey so they don't stand out and distract from post content. They were also made smaller. Signatures used to be white. I wonder why.

The majority I'm sure is against your grey text. This is unfortunate for you, since all we have to do is start ignoring your posts.

And don't say 'lol' to lessen the offense of telling us to go fuck ourselves. You either mean it or you don't. Don't teeter halfway. It makes you appear uneasy and not confident in what you say.

I sense a lock coming soon since no one's on topic anymore. I like 7-Zip. It's small and free.

Hypocrite.

You're so wrong on that one my son.
And the LOL was to show the lack of Respect, nothing else.
Okay, K

So shut it and get out.

Right. Except that's only what you think it shows. It shows you're afraid.

Explain this mood swing to me:

You're asking other people to use their time to help answer your questions, so why are you acting like an arrogant ass ?

Differently colored text is generally used for emphasis. Making your entire post that way is almost the same as using ALL CAPS. The difference is that you are whispering instead of yelling.

Anyhow, 7-Zip is probably about the strongest compression program you can get a hold of right now, but there won't be anything it can do for files that are already compressed. Compression involves a kind of math and pattern matching, and compressing something that is already compressed generally doesn't work. If you are saving JPGs, then you should probably consider using using two disks.

The following common formats are usually hard to compress very far:
*.aac *.ac3 *.arj *.avi *.cab *.dll *.drv *.exe *.gif *.ice *.jfif *.jpe *.jpg *.mp3 *.mp3 *.pdf *.pfm *.png *.rar *.sys *.tar *.wav *.zip
The following common formats are usually easy to compress:
*.bat *.bmp *.cmd *.dib *.doc *.docx *.fon *.hlp *.htm *.html *.icl *.ico *.inf *.ini *.iso *.lnk *.log *.mdb *.mid *.msi *.mst *.pcx *.pcx *.pif *.pnf *.ppt *.pptx *.raw *.rtf *.sav *.svg *.ttf *.txt *.url *.xhtm *.xhtml *.xml *.xmlx

The newest version of Stuffit does have a special function just for compressing jpg images by a considerable amount. Here at my printing shop we have over a terabyte of archived client images. Stuffit is what we use here for older files to be archived prior to being backed up to tape.

Abuse of bbcode and plain dumbassness is getting this thread closed.
