This is my first Build and it just so happens to be an AMD build. I'v herd a lot of good things about this board (Asus A8N32 - sli) in the past and from what i hear now, it still is a trustworthly board. I understand that s939 is dying or its pretty much done..... :( however i'm not looking into getting the next trend of AMD for about a year or two. i thought i start here because i'am going to be using this computer mostly for games( CS CSS WOW ) and making movies for a company.

i think i have everything pretty much down as far as the build, but i'm stuck on what processor to buy that is good, will last a longtime, and is affordable. If i have to.. i'll probably OC, and i still have to figure out how to do that.
I'd appreciate it if i can get some ideas on what processor to purchase, and a little help as i'm obviously a nub at this.... :D

heres what i have so far:

Asus A8N32-sli
processor ?
Kingston HyperX - Memory - 1 GB ( 2 x 512 MB ) - DIMM 240-pin - DDR II - 900 MHz / PC2-7200 - 2 V - unbuffered - non-ECC (not sure if its compatible? is it? lol)
Thermaltake tsunami Black case
XFX Nvidia 7600 GT
600w PSU - raidmax
swifttech watercooling
westernD HD 74gbRaptor

well 1st I would say ditch the raptor harddrive and pick up a SeagteSeagate Barracuda and for a CPU maybe aAMD X2 4800+

and oh ya every other person will say why don't you go intel and get a Core2Duo.

Which is a better bang for your buck

haha..i just might do that...except for the intel/core2duo....i said i'm not looking into buying the newiest trend right now for AMD or intel..i'll wait until the quad chips come out or something in a couple of years.....

processors? processors? s939

Overclocking: Opteron 165
Not Overclocking: 4400+ or 4800+ x2 (You can still overclock but I recommend Opteron)

when it says 2.2 ghz .... thats default correct? ..... do you think thats fine if you leave the 4400+ x2 at that many ghz on this board? would it be fine if your playing just CS CSS and WOW ....

obviously w/ decent ram and graphics ...maby a XFX 7600 GT

im so bad at this... ><

I would give it a little bump to 2.5 or so since you have water, you should be fine for now and then when games come out that truely utilize multicore, you'll still be right in the thick of things! (meaning fine)

That DDR2 memory isn't compatible with 939. You need 184 pin DDR ram. And if your going to OC with that board I would get atleast an OPTY 170. If your not going to overclock very much I'd get atleast the X2 4400+.

I am in the same boat as you and this is my opinion. Go with an Opteron 180, its identical to the 4800+ and more readily available. The bonus, its $300. Or go with one of the lesser power 170 or 165 optys.

good enough, thanks dudes"
one more question. when you overclock, is there ever a time were you have to go back and overclock it again to the same speed it was at? does it ever go back to your default speed? thx<3

ps. i orderd the motherboard and a tsunami thermaltake case yesterday :D and i also have a 500w psu just sitting around here somewhere... :\ gotta look for that. i'm hoping everything comes out fine ><

Yeah, get some different memory. Like ^^^^ said.
I would also get 2gb of ram, that is if your going to be video editing.

Nice board. Picked mine up for a song at Newegg (open box for $119) and works perfect. Paired it with an Opty165 and it runs it very nicely at 2.8Ghz on 1.45v. Actually O/C's better than my DFI Ultra-D did.

It will definately o/c any cpu you put in it...you just need to decide what cpu you WANT to put in it. I was able to max the htt (400) with my Opty165...so going with a high htt shouldn't be much of a problem (ymmv though).
