just wondering.. what printer brands are good?? what about dell printers.. are they any good??

#1 Hewlett Packard

#2 Canon

#3 Epson

#4 Brother

if you can afford it, get a new HP laser printer, you will be glad you did. if you can't, get a refurbished HP laserjet 4L, 5L, or 6L laser. you can get toner REALLY cheap at www.cheaptoner.com and its a lot LOT LOT LOT cheaper per page to print then ink.

also get a HP or canon inkjet for color prints...be mindful those take lotsa ink and ink gets expensive quick.

i think dell's are based on lexmark printers. There are some issues with lexmark printers.
They were just in the news for some "spyware" printer drivers. They also like to chip their ink carts. One of my roommates had driver issues with a lexmark, just to top it off.

I have a canon photo printer (s820) and the photo print image quality is fantastic. The prints arent terribly fade resistant tho. Under glass they are supposed to last reasonably well. On the upside (mine at least) they have seperate color carts that are clear so you can see how much ink is left, no circuity for any shenanigans, and no print head so they are cheaper. ($12 each). Mine has 6 colors, they have 8 color models too, and 4 color ones. Ink lasts a fairly long time.

Epson pigment based printers are supposed to be nice to for photo prints, altho on some the black is weird.

I used to have an old hp inkjet and it was fast for text printing, but the carts were expensive. (tri-color).


For proper photo prints, the online sites cant be beat. For black and white document printing i suspect any printer will be passable.

Low end HP models were made by satan himself. I just threw out my Deskjet 3420, which cost me $70 a few months back. The cartridge tray was connected to the belt via a tiny piece of cheap plastic, which would break just after the 3MONTH WARRANTY was up. Everyone was having problems with this obvious design flaw, and HP did nothing. I superglued it back on, but it broke again..and again.. till I just got pissed and threw it out of a second story window. Needless to say I will never buy a HP printer again.

Canon is good, I've owned a few of their older models and never had any problems.

Epson- Dunno

Lexmark- I've heard nothing good about them, but a few of my friends work at a company Lexmark sued for making replacement ink cartridges...

Not sure but Epsons has a problem with drying ink. My Epson Stylus Color 777 often has the print heads clogged up if i leave it unused for 1-2 months. I have a friend with a 740 and he must bring it to the repair shop 4 times just to clean the print head.

What i'm searching is for a printer with disposable printer head. I think HP does it but Canon ?

HP's are that way. It makes the cartridges more expensive but helps ensure good quality prints all the time.

HP lasers are top notch. Check out eBay for some old 4 M/N printers as they have lots of life left in them.

I agree for the laserjets.. I have a bunch of 5L and 6L at work and it is the easiest ones to repair. I did repair 50-60 for various problems and even rebuilt one from 4 scrapped 5L. However, when we are talking about color or photo printing, i need a good ink printer.

If you're talking about Inkjets, I'd stay away from Hewlett-Packards. MOST people that I know buys HP inkjets because everyone thinks that HP makes good printers. While the printers aren't totally bad, the people who buy Canon or Epson printers get a lot more for their money than those who buy HPs - plus, the people who bought HPs have had a lot more problems with the printer than those who have bought Canon or Epson.

In the laser printer market, the HPs are pretty good - but again, for the money you spend, you'll be able to get a better printer in another brand. Don't get me wrong, I've got an HP laserjet at home because I got a very good deal on it - but if I were buying something brand-new at retail price, I'd probably skip over to the Lexmark aisle.

We've got some Lexmark lasers here at the office that have been positively abused - they're the personal printers, not a true workgroup printer, but they've been hammerd on by 30+ people for several years now, and they've never missed a beat. I bought them because they had hardware Postscript support for the Unix machines. To get an HP with hardware PostScript nearly doubled the price back then.

HP lasers. HP printers, their OLDER ones... are great. Canon makes better printers now. If I were to get an inkjet I would prolly go canon.

If you're *only* going to print photos, then think about the Sony dye-sub printers. You can get one brand new that will do 4x6 for about $200 or less. It costs about 60 cents per print, which sounds high at first - but if you're printing on this quality of paper on an inkjet with photo-quality ink, the cost won't be much lower, and the quality still wouldn't compare to the dye-sub. Plus, the prints from the Sony have a clear coat over them, you can dip your photo in a mug of coffee without hurting it.

At home, I pretty much print text or photos - so I have an older HP LaserJet and the Sony dye-sub. When I have a number of digitals to print, I take them to a photo lab because it's cheaper, but when I need one or two photos, I go to the dye-sub. The quality is just freaking phenominal.

I think that all ink jet printers suck. I am the systems admin for a public school and I have dealt with every make and model that you can imagine. I have less problems with the pro series HP printers. Lexmark and Epson can eat my ass.

Agreed. I don't like Epsons because the print head was not removable/part of the print cartridge. If you don't replace the print head every 2-3 cartridges it'll print like crap. Not sure if Epson ever changed this.

That being said, I own an HP inkjet (720) and I have been happy with it. It's not immune to the general problems that almost ALL inkjet printers have, even though it says HP on the side. It's still an inkjet printer...
