what panel type does the imac use?

20" iMac has an average TN panel
24" iMac has an LG-Philips H-IPS panel, standard sRGB gamut, same as NEC 2490
u2410 has more advanced features for professional photo editing, such a wide gamut and built in LUT, but it's the same H-IPS technology.

S-IPS has been the traditional high end panel from LG, E-IPS is more like H-IPS but will be cheaper than H-IPS and, H-IPS is the new panel type which tends to have better quality overall than S-IPS but is far more expensive. As for which is best it depends on implementation, not all LCDs will have the same quality, one manufacturer will just simply do a better job than others. I have a 27" SPVA, a 30" SPV-A and a 30" S-IPS, the 27" has the best color and contrast and better whites, the 30" SPV-A has better whites overall and more even distribution, the 30" S-IPS has a yellow tinge to everything (even with a little color correction) because of the high green and red gamut but still looks great and has no input lag. You can argue one technology is better than the other but it depends on preference of the user and cost. If you're referring to the most advanced that would be H-IPS.

H-IPS is LPL's standard IPS implementation that I think has an improved pixel structure over the older S-IPS

H-IPS was available in standard and wide gamut, but as the 2490/imac LM240WU2 panel was apparently discontinued it appears that LG is focusing on wide gamut panels in the future.

e-IPS appears to indicate new H-IPS offerings that are standard gamut and very inexpensive. There is a lot of gray area, such as what the NEC LCD2490WUXi2's panel can be classified as, after it was called "eH-IPS" by NEC's product manager.

The LM240WU2 panel would offer the best viewing angles as it should have the successful A-TW polarizer.

This is wrong.
All monitos have LUT.
Unlike u2410, advanced monitors (like NEC 2490) have calibratable LUT and other "professional features".
u2410 is reported to have 12-bit LUT. No ads mention calibratable LUT.
