What p/s would you recommend for a GTX 260 and 8800GTS to fold in one box ?
 
I would agree, I always lean to having nothing over stressed especially the PSU which can do a lot of damage if it breaks down.

Plus a bigger PSU runs cooler, will usually last longer and believe it or not use less overall power at the wall.

I'm running a Corsair HX620 on my dual 8800GTS 640MB Rig no issue. It doesn't even seem to generate much heat from the P/S. The video cards are where the hellfire comes from.
 
I had a post several days ago about trying to run a GTX 260 and almost any 8800 series card. I did not get very much in the way of answers at the time, so I dug a little deeper and have better info. I just pull this machine apart to get to the p/s which had all the wires routed under the mb, groan, and found out it is an Xfinity 600w. So I think that the p/s should not keep me from running the 260 and an 8600gt. It may be marginal but should be able to do that combo imo. BTW vista 64, 6gig ram. What does everyone else think. I would like some advice on this and perhaps I can repay in kind one day. A month of trying to get this to fold on 2 cards is costing me points, lol.
 
I've heard that trying to fold with two different video cards of different cores will not work very well. This may be in itself what is causing you problems. Others on here will be able to chime in with a better answer, but I think this is what you are fighting against.


 
If anyone else can confirm the difficulty in mixing two cores, I can start my plans for a new p/s and another 260, ouch. LOL
 
If you mix 2 different cores, it will slow one of the cards down. It's not worth it. You can however, mix an 8800GTS SSC and a regualr 8800GTS, because I've done it. Made no difference in either card.
 
I have one box with 8800gts's and one box with a 8800GS and a 8800GTS. My problem is trying to add a second 8800 series card, have tried 3 different ones, with my GTX 260. I am starting to think the different core of the 260 is messing things up. I may try to put the 260 in one of the other boxes tomorrow to see if I get the same results and will maybe point to my lack of power in the EVGA setup or perhaps some strange bios settin on m/b ? I will certainly post the results when I find out anything. Hell, it may be vista 64 related.
 
You can mix 8800GT and 9800GT together since they have the exact same specifications. Basically, try to mix cards with the same amount of shaders and speeds close enough to not be affected. This is why even if my main PC have a free PCI-E slot, I didn't put a card there since I have a GTX 260. To get the most of this, I would have been forced to buy another GTX 260 and a new PSU :(
