I also posted this in the Memory forum, I wasn't sure which one it should go in.

When I build my next rig, I either want to use Kingston HyperX, or Corsair XMS. Now, my motherboard will be an ASUS motherboard. I have never tweaked in overclocking, and although I don't intend to, I know myself all too well. Every time I go into the BIOS I will have to look at the tauntalizing CPU speed adjustors, and I know that I will eventually overclock a little, and a little more, and a little more. With this in mind, what kind of memory should I get? The Pentium 4's (I want to go Intel), need at least PC3200 memory, right? If I do buy PC3200 memory, I will have to overclock the memory when I go to overclock the processor, right? However, if I buy say PC4000 memory, can I overclock my processor a bit before I have to start overclocking my memory?

Well..you can go lower..but PC3200 = 200MHz allowing you to run a 1:1 ratio at stock speeds at least.

I read somewhere that running PC4000 memory where you only need PC3200 can actually decrease performance. Is this true?

EDIT: If I buy PC4000 memory, and underclock it to PC3200 speeds, tightening the latencies, will it be the same as buying PC3200 memory at lower latencies? Will it perform the same and be error-free?

EDIT 2: Correct me if I am wrong, but here is what I am thinking:

3.0GHz P4 runs at a quad-pumped 200MHz FSB. (200MHz * 15x multiplier = 3000MHz)

PC4000 memory operates at DDR500 speed. (250MHz)

Therefore, I could overclock my processor to 3750MHz before I have to overclock my RAM. (250MHz * 15x multiplier = 3750MHz)

Yeah if you run it at lower latencies it'll perform the same as PC3200 at tighter latencies..also yeah you can push your cpu that far before oc'ing the RAM.
 
you are right as far as i can tell.. if you notice, pc4000 is usually much lower latencies than pc3200.. so if you get something that is pc3200 2-2-2-x and some pc4000 3-3-3-x.. then they probably are about the same thing.. that is one reason why people got/get BH-5, or TCCD chips.. because it is all virtually the same whether it is rated at pc2700 or pc4500.. the brand matters more because different manufacturers have different circuit boards and such (pcb?) .. something like that..

anyways.. i haven't been following hardware too closesly for a few months, but i know things like patriot LL and pqi turbo both had the tccd chips and were cheap for the money.. so i would say go for the best bank for the buck memory that people are reccomending at the time.. but before getting anything research your specific motherboard with the specific memory you want.. (i kinda screwed myself in this respect, because i have great memory, but it loves voltage, which is the one weakness that my motherboard has, i can't change the memory voltage)
