What makes CoD4 so sucessful?

Give me a break. EVERY ONE of those games you listed are hailed as over rated/over hyped/boring/unrealistic/crappy graphics/crappy physics/no physics/too much physics/ and on and on and ON. All those games are popular more for than just one reason listed. They are also hated for more than one reason listed.

Games are just fun for different reasons to different people.

I completely agree. But since people like to debate and throw their opinions around these kinds of discussions will continue. :)

Honestly, I've been addicted to the multiplayer after buying it a week ago, due mostly to the challenges to unlock. Each of those accomplishments just makes me want to play more.

its the same thing that drives people to play ORPGs for hours/days on end, "working" to get new gear/unlocks. thats all fine until you have a day job and can't or don't want to put in that kind of time.

Because it's well-designed and polished.

Games that do something new are only good when it's properly executed. The industry is littered with the rotting carcasses of good ideas killed by horrible implementation. Games that do the same things done in other games are only good when the end product is...good. They have a whole genre of mistakes behind them to learn from and correct in their own implementation. Maybe new doesn't mean shit, and the only criteria for a quality game is that it has to be a quality game.

Innovation in a complex product like this doesn't pivot on someone getting a bright idea, followed by a fast-forward to instant success. Even "new" ideas are incremental changes to existing ones, "If I have seen farther it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" - Isaac Newton.

Here's a nice Google TechTalk seminar on the reality of innovation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6gaj6huCp0

Big things are not accomplished by a 4 minute montage set against inspiring music, it's built upon long hours of work and development, built on top of long hours of work and development(and guess what that's built on top of). The computers we have today were possible in the 1970s. The reason we didn't have them in the 1970s is because somebody had to start somewhere and do the work getting to the computers we've got today. Refining what exists is definitely "value-added". There were innovative games in the days of the Nintendo, thank god we learned from the mistakes of those innovative games and don't force the players to restart from the beginning of the game when the machine is turned off. You can take good qualities, and remove the bad, and end up with something better than you had before without necessarily being wildly new.

*************
This process continues on and on and in the end you discover that you're looking at something that is an immense leap from the starting point.
*************

I've been playing games for a long time and that doesn't mean I need to be jaded, I can enjoy quality when I see it.

And for what it's worth, I've never seen a call of duty 4 commercial because I only got cable(well, FIOS) about a month ago. I saw a preview video on gametrailers and wrote it off immediately as having nothing of interest. I had no intention of following up on this game, but my roommate bought it so I might as well give it a try. Ended up buying my own copy.

It doesn't have to be new so long as the developer gives a damn enough to run through exhaustive quality reviews, taking a long hard look at what to cut, what to improve, what needs to be added.

Any game will be successful and addicting that involves the following:

a) Completing challenges and achievements

b) Leveling up, especially when earning better equipment and skills are involved

If you have those two elements in your game along with everything else that makes a great game, you have a winner.

Amazing to hear people say something like Halo is only popular because of marketing. Give me a break.

I've been a PC fps fanboy since Wolfenstien, and played Quake for 8 years or so. I've played nearly every decent PC fps. Single player wise, there has not been a single PC fps that has come even remotely close to the incredible AI that the Halo series offers. That's the #1 reason why I got hooked on Halo after playing the first game. Having to actually use strats and rethink every encounter in the game, and the fact it was the first FPS on any platform to have coop out-of-the-box and accessible, made it the best campaign experience I've had in any game.

It isn't just the marketing, get over your PC elitism.

ps. Also did someone say COD4 is the only military based fps? HAH

dumbed-down mmo leveling mechanic, nothing more.

dont get me wrong, its a very polished game and i frequently play myself :D

What game did you play? The Halo I played involved swarms of enemies just running at me. Have you honestly played any modern PC FPS? Halo AI is horrible in comparison to Crysis and even the bots in UT3, which are truly amazing. Good luck playing against them on Godlike.

I just ordered this game. Anyone wanna comment on how good/bad the Anti Cheat system is for mp? How often do you see people using hacks? thanks.

If you play on punkbuster servers there should not be anyone cheating, at least i haven't encountered anyone cheating in my play time.

That's quite sensible.

Why is Cod4 so popular?
Its an arcade shooter disguised as a tactical shooter. It runs on crap machines. It looks pretty and pushes all those emotional buttons for kids at their computers.

Halo because of its marketing.
And only its marketing.
Well, fanboys, and those who think Halo offers something that every other PC shooter has offered for the past 8 years.

HL2/Crysis because of its graphic and physic.
Crysis because of its graphic and physic.
HL2 because of fanboys.

Portal/TF2 because of its creativity.
innovation and the ability to disguise a tech demo as an actual game.

Bioshock because of its story.
Bioshock because of hype and advertising.

Super Mario Galaxy because of Mario.
creativity and timeless fun

GH because it feels like you are good at real guitar (but you are not).
Despite there being only one legend in "legends of rock", and GH3 actually being the 4th GH game....its an overall awesome fun game.

What CoD4 offers? Physic, as crappy as 1.6. Realism crappier than 1.6. Nade spam, more than BF2.
You can shoot through walls.....its also a port.

I personally think this game is overrated, even though for some reason I cant stop playing it (on PS3, lv 50 at prestige 3)
MP reminds of CS...I cant stand to play with kiddies.

I am a big fan of realistic military games, maybe cod4 is the only hardcore FPS around atm?
Im a fan of tatical shooters, and there hasnt been much since GRAW or R6 Vegas.

From what you said you gave me the impression that you have not played ANY of those games... Really - stop trolling. well, maybe appart from CoD4 - it was pretty disappointing to me, appart from the sniper mission of course! :p
And even those were crap compared to the originals (Ghost Recon, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield...)

Whatever happened to Novalogic? Or Red Storm making good games? I want my damn Tactical shooters back!!!
Well, you could try ArmA and the new Flashpoint - however it might not be a true hardcore sim... as it's being released on consoles... :(:( You could also try STALKER - it's not a simulation, but it is pretty realistic and it is an extremely good game.

Well, I played Halo 1 on the PC and it was "ok" the AI was alright - but it just felt too constant, it lacked any fluctuation in gameplay - it was jsut the same stuff over and over again... it might have been a good experience for you, but I just fail to see anything amazing about it...

I tried ArmA but I didn't like the way it felt, the controls we're overkill for realism.

If I'm gaming on my PC or the 360, I'm generally playing COD 4. I don't even like the game. I just play it all the time to piss off my girlfriend. I'm guessing there are around 500 thousand other guys out there that are playing it for the same reason. OH, and I use headphones so I can't hear her yapping.

o snap now thats funny

:D:D:D

Actually, I own them all and based my comments on my opinion and experiences with them.

Before you call someone a troll, make sure they are trolling, or anything resembling it. Tard.

The game is just ridiculously fun. The SP is good, the sniper level is outrageously hard but insanely fun at the same time.

The MP just brings gaming to a whole new level. I know some people will not agree, but every time I get online I run into something new. I'm easily bored so thats a huge plus. Knifing people, blasting people with a pump shotty, throwing someones grenade back at them and killing them with it, the fun is just unlimited.

Well, sure everyone has their say, but the distinct lack of any subtleness in that post strongly suggested that you are just an another idiot who assumes everything.

Why don't you like HL?

What do you mean? Oh, and have you tried STALKER?

No but I want to!

ArmA felt like crap, what I remember the most about it was that it had ridiculous controls and it ran like crap on my 7800GTX and it didnt even look that great lol
