Why is Cod4 so popular?

Halo because of its marketing.

HL2/Crysis because of its graphic and physic.

Portal/TF2 because of its creativity.

Bioshock because of its story.

Super Mario Galaxy because of Mario.

GH because it feels like you are good at real guitar (but you are not).

What CoD4 offers? Physic, as crappy as 1.6. Realism crappier than 1.6. Nade spam, more than BF2.

I personally think this game is overrated, even though for some reason I cant stop playing it (on PS3, lv 50 at prestige 3)

I am a big fan of realistic military games, maybe cod4 is the only hardcore FPS around atm?

I think thats your answer. Apparently its addicting and its the only military FPS around.

???? I dunno, I think it looks great, runs good on my PC, and is fun in general. Just me though....:)

I wish the game was longer though...

Story and cinematism.

Because of its advertising. Everyone's heard of it, especially since it had 3 successful sequels. On the console side it was especially successful because it was the first WW2 shooter on the Xbox 360 when there were only a couple of shooters out for that console. Everyone who bought a 360 had to look at the available games for it and CoD2 was pretty much their only first-person shooter option.

CoD never did anything new. It was simply a rip-off of MoH (medal of honor) and as soon as MoH games stopped being so great, CoD stole the WW2 FPS thunder. By the time CoD4 came out, too many people knew about it for it to sell badly, even with a piss-short SP campaign. They added a couple of new (to CoD games) little features and that was enough to make it addictive online so the word spread after that.

Its an arcade shooter disguised as a tactical shooter. It runs on crap machines. It looks pretty and pushes all those emotional buttons for kids at their computers.

Halo because of its marketing.
And only its marketing.
Well, fanboys, and those who think Halo offers something that every other PC shooter has offered for the past 8 years.

HL2/Crysis because of its graphic and physic.

Portal/TF2 because of its creativity.
innovation and the ability to disguise a tech demo as an actual game.

Bioshock because of its story.
Bioshock because of hype and advertising.

Super Mario Galaxy because of Mario.
creativity and timeless fun

Despite there being only one legend in "legends of rock", and GH3 actually being the 4th GH game....its an overall awesome fun game.

You can shoot through walls.....its also a port.

MP reminds of CS...I cant stand to play with kiddies.

Im a fan of tatical shooters, and there hasnt been much since GRAW or R6 Vegas.

Talking on the console side...

It also has one of the best matchmakign systems besides Halo.

Frankly Halo initially got very popular because it had a good matchmaking system. Most other games had the whole "join a lobby" idea that works well with PC games and server browsers, but on a console it just did not work well for whatever reason. People just did not play those games much and they died over time (even thought a lot of games had online like that).

Halo brought the idea of, hey everyone get in a room with your buddies and then go search and join a game together! COD4 allows the same thing (even though it is not as advanced as Halo 3 and sometimes screws up putting you into a different game than your friends), but it makes it easy to have a bunch of pals and you find a server.

I played BF2 hardcore a few years back and it was always a PITA to join games and get all my friends in with me. Cant tell you how many times I waited for an open slot or had to listen to them whining to get an open slot!

COD4 also is just plain a good solid game. The other COD games were as well...but WWII was getting a bit tired, finally something modern!

Anybody ever play Socom or Socom 2 for PS2 online? Those two were my favorite online games, ever - more than CS:S, CoD2 - and that's basically all I've played since then.

Is CoD4 similar to either of those games?

Personally coming off of Gears of War, Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, and very little Halo 3, COD4 (for the xbox360, gonna get it on PC soon) feels NEW to me for serveral reasons. First, the perks system kicks ass. Second, the experience points makes the game addicting because you're always wondering what's going to be unlocked next and the points feel rewarding. Third, the way the attachments for guns are unlocked by getting kills is another addicting element. I'm always curious about how some of the guns are with different attachments so I keep playing until I unlock them. Fourth, prestige mode keeps you coming back when you're at level 55. Fifth, the matchmaking is very quick and simple, although some say it's too simple, but I like it. Sixth, the game feels very polished out of the box, except for some map glitches and grenade spamming that is starting to get out of control as everyone is starting to unlock the 3 frag grenade perk.

This is the FIRST cod game that I have played (so I can't comment of the past COD series) and I was surprised about how fun the multiplayer was. It's currently my favorite game and I probaby wouldn't go back to any other of my old FPS games. COD feels a bit like an role playing game with it's experience, perks, and weapons system. I used to enjoy RPGs but became unpatient because I just don't have time to play games like I was when I was a kid. So I appreciate how COD brings the RPG elements in a fast paced FPS. Everytime you unlock a new gun or perk it gives you another reason to play. With other FPS games they give you all the guns so it made you feel like there's no future goal to shoot for. COD gives it to you slowly and they do it very well, imo. You're always tinkering with gun attachments and perks to find what best suits you. Once you get become good at your favorite weapon/perk combo and start to get bored, then you can just pick a new gun and the cycle repeats and the game feels new again.

Before cod I played gears of war and was semi-addicted but cod is like crack to me. Halo3 was a huge dissapointment to me because the multiplayer felt OLD. Team fortress was cool but it didn't keep my attention for long. I just got bored of TF and hated how you had to wait about 10 seconds after you're killed. The wait didn't feel right for the fast actioned pace.

So hoped that answered your question to why COD is so sucessful.

how about "fun"

It's just fun.

I'll ignore the beating a dead horse Halo bashing, but it falls under the same category.

Does everything need a an overabundance of analysis?

Agreed, it is just fun. But I have to say that it's fun for me because it brings together the right elements to FPS games to make it feel fresh. With halo 3 even with all the new elements the core game felt old. It felt like halo 2.5.

It's made really well and has a nice tight feeling to the multiplayer - not mushy like bf2....

I just bought CoD4 this weekend and beat it in one-night. It was a decent game but I agree with the OP in that it's vastly overrated if it's the most popular FPS right now. The single player was fun and interesting the first time around but not enough to make me go back and re-play it again.

Compared to other FPS', CoD4 is good but I think Half-Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2 just blow it away especially in single-player. The graphics, gameplay, and physics just pales in comparison to a polished title like HL2. Personally, I think game developers like Valve, Blizzard, and Nintendo create games that are leagues ahead of the rest of the competition it makes it hard for me to get into other games.

The only thing CoD4 did better than HL2 was the sniper level, Captain MacMillan is a pimp.

I feel like "unlocks" are a contrived way of extending gameplay sort of like BF2. I prefer to have all of my options eligible to me ala Raven Shield. All weapons and all attachments available at start.

Halo's concept while feeling original to most console users, possible since the last decent cconsole shooter was probably Goldeneye or Perfect Dark. However to me it felt like Tribes.

For me the biggest thing with CoD4 is something I'm not sure you can really quantify. It's in the "feel" of the game. The way the controller works with it, the smoothness of the graphics, the sound, it's a game that's more than the sum of it's parts, at least in the multiplayer.

I think everyone knew exactly what they would get from the singleplayer, but the multi is a whole different story.

Im a fan of tatical shooters, and there hasnt been much since GRAW or R6 Vegas.

And even those were crap compared to the originals (Ghost Recon, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield...)

Whatever happened to Novalogic? Or Red Storm making good games? I want my damn Tactical shooters back!!!

To me it's the first console shooter that get's the single and multiplayer sides perfect, it just feel's wright. I know a lot of people always scream Halo! Halo! but Halo single player is to damn kiddie for me, to many bright colors and to many ewoke wannabies running around speaking Japanese, imo. CoD4 is just the complete package.

And coming around a blind corner in multiplayer and getting blasted by a automatic shotgun for the first time will blow your mind.:D

Give me a break. EVERY ONE of those games you listed are hailed as over rated/over hyped/boring/unrealistic/crappy graphics/crappy physics/no physics/too much physics/ and on and on and ON. All those games are popular more for than just one reason listed. They are also hated for more than one reason listed.

Games are just fun for different reasons to different people.

I never found CoD4 any more fun than BF2... infact.. I actually prefer BF2. (BF2 without the vehicles that is... no vehicle servers ftw)

You guys are missing the point if you are rating it on SP...it is really popular because of the Multiplayer!

and having unlocks right away is fun for awhile...but you have nothing to work towards. I like having to work towards something even if it is frustrating. At least they are attainable in COD4 thx to the prestige system (which is very unique IMO)...in games like BF2 you pretty much have to devote your life to it to get all the unlocks.

If there is nothing to work towards, eventually you tire of the game and stop playing.

O, and BF2 is still king...and I like vehicles. Wish it was still old school (pre-some of the latest patches), but what do ya do. I havent played a lot for a few years, but whenever I do go on I still get top of the server almost every game ;)

That's crap. Medal of Honor was great because of the guys at IW. Something like 22 of the guys who worked on MoH: Allied Assault(the only good MoH title IMO) left and started Inifinty Ward and did WW2 right. The dribble EA has been pumping out for Medal of Honors since has been pathetic. The solo campaign was really short and easy, but the MP is great.

I'll agree to your agreeance! :D

It's the sum of the parts in CoD4. It's tight, well balanced, has an abundance of weapons and add-ons, and runs well.

QFT and I couldn't have said it better!

i dont know if its been said, but i think its really popular, first off, becuase of the new hardware that has come out... with 8800, it can be played, and was expected to be a large step above CoD3.
the physics are great in it. i really like the reload, you can almost feel the guy reach down to get the clip, and put it in, real life motion.

Right now, there are not that many new 'modern' war games out right now. year, FEAR, doom3, crysis... but they are not as realistic as CoD4

Portal/TF2 because of its creativity.

Your statement here is only partially correct. I think TF2 is equally successful because of it's creativity AND it's gameplay.. if the awesome gameplay wasn't there, you can have all the goofy characters and sound bytes in the world and people would not play it..

I don't play a game to do work. I play for recreation. I have more fun if I get to pick what I want when I want it. I already worked to pay for the damn game.

Personally I think it's because we've been saturated in overused FPS motifs that are simply exhausted in gameplay. Even though CoD is a little played out, the gameplay is fresh enough not to matter as much.

If I'm gaming on my PC or the 360, I'm generally playing COD 4. I don't even like the game. I just play it all the time to piss off my girlfriend. I'm guessing there are around 500 thousand other guys out there that are playing it for the same reason. OH, and I use headphones so I can't hear her yapping.

Novalogic stopped trying to be realistic after Delta Force 2. Tom Clancy sold Red Storm off to Ubisoft for $40 million or so. I would not expect see anything that holds a candle to the old games from them again.

unlocks -- the feeling of accomplishing something after hours of multiplayer sessions.

It's a refreshing change from monster on human combat. I've had enough of that shit

on the console version, you have the prestige mode, which doesn't do much but piss me off. Once you go to the next prestige level, all your stuff is locked back up and you're left with the stock weapons again. Fine...fine...but when I'm playing with people online and getting smoked by people who haven't not chosen prestige mode, it's kinda lame that I might be getting beaten because I have weaker guns. Don't get me wrong. I can usually smoke just about anyone with an m16 before they get me with a p90. Except in close range of course. Pretty much any chance I get, I'll pick up someone's g3 or p90.

ummm... thats fairly twisted there...

I love it because theres so many types of gameplay modes and it doesnt take a clip from an smg to kill someone(halo)
