What makes an overclock fail?

If the RAM is not an issue, i.e. underclocked way below its specs, what exactly makes an overclock fail, when it either won't post or restarts randomly? Temperatures don't seem to be the problem... Is there just a limit for the HTT/FSB for each chip? If I put the HTT at like 280, and the multiplier at 4, it doesn't POST, but if I put the HTT at 224 and multiplier at 5, it works fine... Perhaps the motherboard? (asus k8n-e deluxe, 3200+ 754, stock cooling)
 
could be mobo or could be chip....you, or someone else, probably just got a bad chip *shrug*

there's also the PSU..
 
To clarify, I can go to about 2.5ghz stably, but run into a brick wall then; now I see it's the CPU probably. My PSU is an Antec 450watt, so I don't think that's the problem (one dvd +-rw, one harddrive, so no big strain...) Thanks!
 
If I remember correctly, the K8N-E Deluxe doesn't have working PCI/AGP locks. I could be wrong on this. If the board has no working locks, than that's more than likely your problem. Otherwise, if temperatures are OK and you're running your ram underspeed, then I'd suggest a problematic PSU.
 
you could have hit a wall with your chip. there's a point where they just won't run any faster and it all depends on how lucky you were when you bought the chip (whether you got a good chip or not) of course you could phase change cool it and get some extra mhz out of it but that's expensive. could be that the motherboard just doesn't want to go any further. or like freeloader1969 said, it could be a pci/agp lock problem

Oh, by the way, once I got done and decided to stick with 227x11, I decreased the voltage .125 volts and the temp dropped 15 degs celsius :eek:
 
HTT x fsb = 1000....DON"T let that # go above 1000, they just don't like it.
so no more than 4HTT x 250 for 1000 or 333 x 3 for 999 (1000fsb).....Also if its a MSI k8n neo2 board and your using a SATA OS drive on SATA #1 port move it to #3....i haven't tested a rig with 3 SATA Drives fully yet, to see if the data drives on SATA #1 & #2 will affect yoru Overclock.

Also, i'm a big supporter of quality powersupply is the FIRST piece that should matter in your system when OC'ing. OCZ Powerstream Series are teh best PSU in my opinion, get oen of those and you can't go wrong. The Antec 550w's are OK too.
