i personally consider anything made by apple that costs 5000x more than its worth mac
In short, it is the operating system made proprietary for the computers made by Apple. But since every computer apple makes uses macintosh, all apple computers are macs.
As to compare it to windows, I cant say much.
Mac is unix based, so it generally is more stable, but harder to use(but apple has seemed to bring this difficult level down to: even retarded joe can do it!) My father works with them a lot, and says they are an utter bitch to manage on the administrator(root) level. There is not nearly as much software to select from for macs, for whatever reason i dont know.
Windows started dos based, I dont know if it still is since 2k.Practically everything and their mother supports running in windows. I feel windows is easy to manage(even on the administrator levels), but then again, I have been somewhat trained. Stability is really shaky and is mostly due to some peice fo software screwing up windows. If you can keep the software in line, the system will work like a charm.

people say the mac is more stable, but the problem isn't the hardware -- it's the software.
The PC has SO many choices for software and hardware, that getting it all to play nicely can be a challenge.
The Mac has such a limited selection of everything, so this issue is not nearly as large of a task.

The best way to think of Apple machines is they cost twice as much for something 50% slower and a hundreth of the software available for a PC. But they sure look purdy 
People complain about MS dominating the PC scene, but does anyone ever complain that you can only buy Mac hardware from Apple and the OS is Apple only too. They control the resellers so the price is fixed and OS10 is "upgraded" every year so that $120 you spent on the latest version becomes obsolete.
And dont forget Quicktime (owned by Apple) is more annoying than realplayer for taking over your system.

Really, what everybody else said, it's basically an alternative OS. Apple actually licensed the MAC OS way back in '95, the same way that Microsoft licenses Windows. They actually could have broke out and been a serious contender then, but decided to bring the hardware back in-house and control it all.
I think one thing that makes a mac is people who spent $3000 for thier iMac and rave about how good it is, even thought that same amount will have bought 3 pretty good WINTEL PC's.
I think it's sort of a status symbol now more than an actual productive piece of equipment. Kind of like a Bentley.
