Other than RPM what is the difference between a 2mb,8mb or 16mb buffer. Are they going to make the drives faster? I have a WD 80gb 7200 w/2mb buffer, is an 8mb or 16mb be that much faster if at all?

going from 2MB to 8MB is a performance boost of about 20% in pretty much any application. 8MB to 16MB isn't such a large leap in performance, but still delivers awesome gains in bootup performancee and solid but fairly small gains in most other tasks. here is a comparison between the DiamondMax Plus 9 and the MaxLineIII. Admittedly, the larger buffer is not the only difference between the two drives, but it is the most significant. Also, the DM+9 was a below average drive for its generation. Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 and WD Caviar WD2500Jx are much closer in performance to the MaxLine than Maxtor's older drive is.
