For some reason or another my computer ending up freezing mid-game when I was jacked into the Matrix Online. I had to manually shut it off because of this lockup. After waiting for an hour or so I went back to my PC to boot it up again. What followed had me a bit scared...

My screen went kinda buggy on me and was not sure what the cause was. I figured it might have been a bad boot up, so I restarted the computer. However I kept getting the same screens:

I tried running it in Safe Mode, however you can see how well that worked...

I just want to know if this is a Video Card problem, CPU, Memory, etc. It intrigues me how well my system can work so well and then all of a sudden turn out like this. I do not overclock, it has proper heating, etc. I also sprayed some "Anti-dust" spray into the machine before rebooting.

Anti Dust? Never heard of that, may not be the greatest thing to have in a computer, good old filters rock for keeping dust out.

Anyway, looks like some sort of heat caused damage. Some others may be able to point out a certain cause.

no realy you fried your card its dead RMA if you wernt ocing it other wise make a tipe to bestbuy and get a new one

Damn, this had me worried. I also don't have a backup card, so hopefully it won't take very long to get a new one :(

So it really does look like it's dead...it's not a heating problem?
 
I've seen patterns like that befor, try blowing out the DVI connector and pluging it back in, if that dosn't work you could also try reseating the card.
Just makeing sure you try all your options befor RMAing it :D

I am that's for sure. I only hope though that the next card lasts me more than 4 months. It's funny to because I have never overclocked it (besides it being OC'd out of the box). The only thing I can think of is running games like Hl2 and Doom 3.

Does anyone know if they offer a similar upgrade program as eVGA does?
 
try to underclock the card... maybe its a heat issue.

but yea.. id say your in for some problems w/ that card.
 
Well I decided to take some of the advice given and jiggled the DVI cable, reseated the card, cleaned it a bit, etc. and am still getting the same problems. So it looks like I will be calling up BFG and getting an RMA

I really appreciate all the help from everyone, this board truly is wonderful. Seeing as I will be getting a new 6600gt, would anyone suggest me upgrading to a 6800?

no just keep your 6600gt whenever you get it...it has plenty of speed

Oh Noes!!! you haxx0red your videocard too much!!!! This same thing happend to me when I had my radeon 9800 pro at about 600mhz gpu and 1000mhz ram (Did I fail to mention after that it started on fire? Anyways). When you sprayed the "Anti-dust" spray into the case were you holding the can upside down??
 
Hmmm, not that I know of. If anything it would have been sideways. Why does this lead to video cards crapping out?
 
Well, umm, those cans of "Anti-dust" spry are just compressed air (c02). When you hold it upside down then the liquid c02 will come spraying out of the can and you could have possibly frozen your videocard rather than every one else misleading you to believe that you have fried it. Ok back to the real subject. I got those kinds of artifacs and such after overclocking too much and running an intensive program to see I was overclocking too much. I clocked it down, rebooted the macine, and it was fine. So in your case if I had a bet it would be heat is hurting your card. Sorry if you said already, what kind of cooling you got on the card and in the case?
 
Hmm, well now that I think of it I pressed a little too long and too much and some of the CO2 did cover the inside of the case and a bit on the backside of the video card. I have stock cooling on the card. I also have a Super Lan Boy case, therefore I have one 120mm intake fan in the front and a 120mm exhaust fan in the back. I have good cable management as well.

If I did freeze it when cleaning it and had it sit for awhile, would it have warmed up to an efficient temp in order to work or did I cause prolonged damage to it?

You fried it, too much cooling would be hard to do, just phone for an RMA.

Possibly your power supply is not working properly or your house is giving dirty power.
 
The fan works perfectly fine when pc booted, so I doubt that is a cause.

Even if you did get liquid CO2 on the card it'd go away rather soon, that stuff doesnt last long (to have fun turn it upside down and spary it on one of your nipples for just a few seconds).

Anyway, just call up the BFG place and get an RMA, it'd be a total waste of your money right now to upgrade (you'd only get about a 25% boost a most) right now.

na just keep the 6600GT its fine ^^
BFG is pretty fast with RMAs and you can call 24/7 so you should have a new card soon
i think BFG may even cross ship you a new card if you need a card now just go to like walmart and get some cheap ass card
 
Yeah I know a few others who have had great experience with RMAs from BFG. To be quite honest I am in no immediate rush for a new video card. Thank God I kept my laptop after building my desktop :)

Not a real nice thing to do, but Wal-Mart's policy allows you to return pretty much anything within 90 days as long as you have the receipt.

As far as upgrading - it really depends on what games you play and if you're happy with your current framerates on the 6600GT.

walmart has sold video cards for a long time, i remember seeing r9600's on shelves a few years ago.

Really? My Walmart rocks, lol. Have a MUCH larger selection of games than even an EB near me store. They carry a wide range of printers and have several budget graphics cards and sound cards, plus a whole section dedicated to wireless networking.

Depending on where you live, they probably aren't big sellers.
I live in a small, low income, town full of rednecks and whitetrash - most of the people here have no knowledge of computer parts.

We just got a huge new supercenter wal-mart last year and they have a bunch of stuff in the electronics department they didn't have at the old one. I was checking out the clearance rack last week for possible ebay opportunites, and they had the 9200 AIW cards marked down 50% to $75. I bought all of them, but when I got home, I saw they weren't selling for much, so I just took them back.

Anyway, even our old shitty walmart had like FX 5200s.

You can easily set the card to way high clock speeds, learn how to read before you post Bullshit.

I dunno of OP read my suggestion: try disassembling the hsf on videocard, maybe there's a clog of dust blocking airflow.. happened to someone else on this board just a few days ago, only he had 6800ultra ;) WOrth a shot imho
