We currently do a daily, monthly, and 6 month back up. We have a 40gb tape drive. We have 31 tapes for the daily that we keep for 30 days then reuse the monthly tapes are kept for an entire year as well as the 6 month tapes. We also do a monthly CD back up of our database as well as our quickbooks data. The tapes will back up all documents/forms, websites, exchange mailboxes, and our database. We perform file restore test every week. We are thinking about using external hard drives or network storage as another option for backing up. Would you guys mind sharing your back up plan with me? Thanks alot!

I would say thats a pretty good setup compareds to most people I talk to. I work at a parts wholesale company and most the people who we build/sell servers to don't even have a backup routine. If they do it's mostly a daily backup with 5 tapes and they *never* do a resto test =/ Needless to say I have to hear about people loosing data quite a bit! People seem to think that a RAID 5 array is a backup?? Here in our office we have 2 USB laptop drives we rotate out. I actually backup to another file server too since we don't use a tape drive. Ours definatly isn't the best but I work with what I have heh.

We have 3 sets of rotating tapes for our Domain (1.2TB Ultirum Bins) that run one week in the server room ,one week of storage at another branch, and one week offsite. You may want to consider taking the tapes offsite. It sucks to have a nice backup and then your datacenter goes up in flames ALONG with the tapes :p

Our Mainframe and DMZ backups are seperate tape drives, following a 4 week rotation vs 3 for the domain.

RNAS is good stuff if you have the pipe to push it offsite. Our dedicated T1's would just choke on the data we backup daily.

On our AS/400's, we have 4 boxs, the main console and 3 partitions. Each partition runs differential backups M-F, a saturday backup is done(some are maintence) and then a weekly, montly, and yearly. The differentials are kept for 30 days, the weeklys for 30 days, and the monthly for a year, yearly, well that depends on the box, the finance is kept for 7 years. They are all on LTO 1 (100GB) tapes.

Our network backup is done with Veritas Backup Exec, Just backups everynight, kept for 14 days.

This seems to work well for us, our data mirroring servers scsi;s took a dump on us and took the MB with it and all was restored, the only pain was upgrading the mirroring software for some reason it just didn't want to work.

EDIT: oh and the month, year, and network tapes are stored in safeboxes in our volt, well more like a fire retardant closet.

I do a daily, monthly, and quarterly backup on AIT3 (100/260GB), I have two weeks (10 tapes) of daily plus 5 weeks (5 tapes) of friday tapes, a year of monthly (12 tapes), and we keep the quarterly tape "forever".

The daily and two friday tapes are kept offsite, and the monthly and quarterly tapes are kept in a fireproof vault with the accounting department's stuff.

I do not do a scheduled restore test, but I have to restore files/emails for users often enough that I feel confident in the integrety of the data.

I backup: files, profiles, exchange mailboxes, exchange information store, system information, and SQL databases fully in every backup. (I do both the mailboxes and information store because I have the space on the tape, and it would make recovering the exchange server easier)

In addition to all this, I have a relatively up to date IDR tape for each server. (full backup of the server, boot off cd it restores off tape no need to install OS)
