A few months ago I started receiving poor processor performance immediately after rebuilding my computer in mATX form factor. I downloaded throttlewatch and it was showing signs of 20-50% throttle, so I ordered an Alpha HS/Fan combo to replace the 2.4 P4 stock cooler that was currently on my p4. The Alpha I got was supposedly one of the best socket 478 coolers out there, and the fan is very loud running at over 4000rpm's. This fixed my throttle problem for the most part, however I opened up throttlewatch during load to find my computer still throttling a small amount 1-10% sporadically during intensive loading. I've got an two new Core2Duo machines (e6300/e6600) and I'm selling this build to a member of my friends family, who doesn't necessarily need ever little bit of performance out of it, but I didn't think she'd enjoy the sounds my Alpha fan makes so I tried seeing if I could underclock and use just a heatsink on my P4.
I underclock my P4 to 185mhz*17 which is about 3.17 and then turn off the fan. I boot up. Cpu jumps from 31 Celsius to 83, and i immediately shut it off. I touched the heatsink to make sure it had a good connection with the processor and was even cooling it and it was blazing hot, i mean you could feel the heat radiating from this thing.
I really want to remove the fan, but I don't want to underclock it to a 1.7 to do it. Anyone have any suggestions or similiar experiences?
These temps are idle for the most part, and my fan is blowing air on the proc instead of sucking it out.
