i have a pentium 4 1.5ghz 487pin and an intel 845 motherboard. these came stock on my hp pavilion 7955. the box and gear have been sitting for about 2 years, and i need a basic pc to run some word and excel at my dads shop, so i tried to boot it up. the box powered up, but got no picture. so i replaced the agp video card with a cheap 8mb card from the local computer store....still nothing. then just for grins, i removed the heatsink and fan, and booted it. ( i know this is VERY wrong)...but the processor wasnt getting any power i guess because it didnt get hot, not even slightly warm. is this the processor, the motherboard, or both???? does anyone know? THANKS GUYS!!!!
 
Is it plugged in? So the BIOS doesn't post. My first thought would be bad Power Supply. You can google it or someone I'm sure knows a link to a good doc here. I looked on google but didn't find anything quick and easy to link to to make sure it's working.
 
What kind of beeps, if any, do you get when the PC powers on? If you get a series of beeps, rather than a single one, then that would be the most obvious indication of some kind of fault.

If you leave the computer running, do the drives spin up? Do the optical drive and floppy drive lights come on?

If the motherboard has a jumper to clear the CMOS, try that. Or just pop the battery out and wait a few minutes (with the power cable unplugged, of course). You might have a bad CMOS battery, but I can't imagine why that would cause the computer to not boot up.
 
okay....since i get nothing on the screen, i cannot say what is happening. i get no indicator lights on the front of any kind except power led. the harddrive is spinning up, the floppy nor the cd rom are lighting their led indicators. and i get no beeps. THIS SUCKS. i did get the cpu to get hot though....so that is a good thing (i guess)

and when i leave it on for a little bit, the harddrive just sits and spins
 
Well, there's alot of things that could be the problem. Start with making sure everything is connected properly (make sure the cables/devices are seated properly). Next, check for any visible signs of damage on the mobo. The caps usually are the first thing to go on a mobo, so start with those. Also, clear the BIOS by either pressing a button or moving a jumper (the mobo instructions will say how to do this). If you think it's the PSU, which it may be, you can test it with a multimeter. they're pretty cheap, and are very easy to use if you're not familiar with them. Other than that, and without more info, it's hard to diagnose or suggest anything. Good luck.

::EDITE:: Oh yeah, forgot to mention: never remove the heatsink and boot. BAD idea. :) Although, I think most Intels have built in voltage drops if the temp gets too high.

yes i know this...lol....but i figured it was the only way to know. i didnt even alow it to get hot

i dont know what other info to supply. if i have an 845 intel chipset on my other computer with a 478 socket, can i take the 1.5 and put it in there to see if it works? will i hurt anyting? the only bad part is moving my watercooling around to get to the cpu.
 
Well, more info would include things like: PSU, RAM, any drives, BIOS info (which I guess you wouldn't be able to get...), etc.

It's not all necessary, but sometimes it helps because someone may have experienced a similar problem. Speaking of PSU, you said the CPU wasn't getting power? There are three reasons I can think that would cause this: 1) PSU isn't supplying power for whatever reason 2) CPU is bad 3) mobo is bad.

Usually when a mobo goes, it's the capacitors that go first. check it out for anything that looks out of place, like swollen capacitors. As for the CPU, not really sure how to test it without having another comp to throw it into. If the PSU isn't giving power, it could be for any number of reasons (cables not connected or seated properly, PSU is dying, etc). After re-reading everything, I'm thinking the PSU might be going. 2 years sitting around will give most electronics a hard time.
 
OKAY EVERYONE.....a little update.

stopped by the local computer expo sale today, and got a pretty good deal on an MSI PT880 mobo and an Intel Celeron D processor 2.13gb or something. I get everything hooked up and ready to go. its in a different case this time, but some psa. I go to boot up, SAME THING!!!!!! even after replacing the mobo and processor. SOOOO i took the psu off of my nice rig, and hooked it up, same thing. all i need the the two power connectors and a way to switch the thing on, right? i got a video card in there, and its hooked up to a monitor (ive tried two video cards and two monitors). my next thing is to actually install this psu into the new system, (connect ALL hookups) and see what happens. I dont know what to do yall???? they even hooked up the mobo/processor/ram to a video card and monitor before i left the computer expo. I NEED HELP!!!!! trobleshooting sucks!


EDIT: what should i be testing for with my multimeter? i connected green to black to boot it up. and then i tested the 4pin that powers the cpu, checks out a perfect 12v ?????im depressed

EDIT 2: the other specs are 128mb ddr 333 pc 2700, 150w stock from HP system psu, (used 350w qmax out of my main rig to see if it would work), WD 40gb (was in old system), bargain bin 3.5" floppy, HP 52x Cd-RW drive
 
when you were trying your new mobo/CPU, you did plug the extra 4 pin power connector.. right? was the mobo brand new or used? anyways - try clearing CMOS.. try motherboard out of the case with ram and vid card.. short power switch pins with a screwdriver to start it up..

yes, i did plug in the 4pin power

its new (as far as i know)....ive got manuals, cables, box, and everything is untouched

tried clearing cmos

ill try it outside (like they did there) and see what happens. i was how they used the screwdriver on the switch pins, i knew thats what they were doing, but now i know HOW. thanks. ill try this in the a.m.
 
it really doesnt make sense. i pulled the new mobo, processor, and video card out and pluged into the hp psu. wasnt posting. pulled the new video card and put the old one in, its finally posting. now i got to figure out weather my old mobo/processor is any good. the new videocard isnt! i got to fight them to return it now

how does this work?
