Hi,

I am as new as it gets when it comes to distro/linux programs (not even sure if I said that right). Can somebody tell me what Ubuntu is? I saw it on a friend's laptop and I'd like to have it on my Dell m70 as well. All info is greatly appreciated.

ps If there is a website that helps newbs, link me, please. Thanks!

Ubuntu is a distro based on Debian, GNU/Linux operating system distribution that is, its really sweet I dont like the original one because I dont like Gnome much, so I used kubuntu with KDE.

If youre HUNGRY for learning Id recommend slackware :D.

www.linuxquestions.org is a sweet site, helped me out of every jam I ran into.

I have recently begun using Ubuntu, but I did a base server install so that I wouldn't end up with KDE and Gnome. It's a fun distro, but it has some quirks (gcc only installs gcc, not g++, they have split packages for openssh, for a client and server). However, it's very easy to use and can detect a lot of your hardware off the bat.

Maybe I'm just making up minor quibbles since I'm so used to Gentoo and Slackware and such, but eh. Ubuntu's nice.
