What is "triple buffering"??

I have looked in that post and it dont tell ou what it is... so anyone know what it is?

It uses two backbuffers and a single frontbuffer, thus allowing two rendered frames to be stored in the backbuffer while only one is flipped to the front.

In practice, this solves the problem of vsync requiring the framerate of a game to be 1/2 or 1/3 of the refresh rate when a high enough rate isn't attainable. So with my 60hz refresh on my LCD at 1600x1200, if the framerate falls below 60 it will not default directly to 30 with vsync enabled.

In other words, tripple buffering makes vsync something you can have on at all times with no unwanted effects other than a max framerate (whatever your refresh is).

glasses?

does triple buffering lower your framerate in any way, other than capping it at your refresh rate? for example, if i get like 50 fps in some game with vsync and triple buffering off, would i still get 50 fps with vsync and triple buffering on?

it could lower your framerate because it eats up more memory

if you have a 128MB video card and you are running at high rez + aa it could eat into your performance significantly

with a 256mb card less

and even less with a 512mb card

so for tripple buffering the more local memory the better
