What is this external hard drive doing?

Bought a WD "My Book" external hard drive last week. Everything seems to work fine except that at least once an hour it goes "CLICK" in a loud thunky way, with a bit of a bizz following it.

I thought it might be the heads parking, but why would they be doing that, I'm not accessing the drive? The light on the front flashes on and off when not using the drive, and especially when I'm accessing websites!? My Iomaga external drive sitting next to it doesn't do any of this.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
yeah, this would be one of them, but surely after insulting the other posters on here as ignorant you are not expecting an answer, are you?

I would guess that giving WD tech support a call may be a smart idea. In the end, they are bound to know what is going on. Does this occur when the HDD is turned on, but not connected to the USB drive? Did you install any software with that drive?
 
my seagate was doing all sorts of stuff plugged into the usb..
seemed that it always made noises and clicking.
THEN one day it stopped.
The damn microcrap was polling the usb all the time to see if it was there and what
it was doing.
This was the time that they fixed the battery life on the laptops.
I assume they also quit doing this stupid crap on all sytems and now it never makes any
noise until i read or write to it.

Same Operating system though, so if the fix for laptop battery life stoped XP from polling the USB ports, it would fix the problem on a desktop as well as on a laptop.

Is your install of XP up to date on patches and updates?
