I have been folding F@H for a long time now, but I know that alot of you guys fold for UD.

What is the difference between the two programs, and why run one over the other?

Also, why do some run both?

Which one is which? Damn I have to make sure I keep em straight now. :p

Haha, so seriously, is there even a difference?

My opinions only:

FAH can run as a service, natively. UD can, with a bunch of third party apps.

FAH has native nix client base.

FAH has SMP/GPU clients, albiet most limited currently in platform offerings.

UD has a scoring system which I don't think anyone can explain, I've asked before and even stumped moose. Not saying FAH has a good scoring system, it's at least simple and XX WU is worth XX points to everyone.

UD generally has smaller work packet size (memory requirments etc.). FAH has options for small memory usage and large memory usage work.

UD operates over straight port 80, FAH needs outbound 8080 at times for some work servers (99% moot issue).

UD has password protected accounts, FAH does not.

Moose has a little wewe.

UD has a new client coming out (when?) which should change things up a bunch (SMP support and some others).

UD owns and can sell the results you send in, FAH in all open source so to speak (yea, go yell at someone else- that's the way I read it).

Generally speaking, FAH will stay out of the way more than UD in a corp. setting. No default screen saver install, no task tray icon-- installs as a service.

Large base of 3rd party monitoring/installing FAH tools, I simply don't know what the UD offerings are.

UD's score is based on time processing, packet size, number of hits, as well as hardware used.

Completely bogus information there, UD results are the intellectual property of Oxford University and the Nationial Foundation for Cancer Research. If UD sold the results to anyone they could be sued, simple as that.

If you read the project faqs you will see the info clear as day.

Here are 2 instances from the project Faqs.

Q. Are the results going to be made public?

A.Yes. Prof. Graham Richards' research group in the Chemistry Department of Oxford, the project coordinators, will publish the results. This group originally designed the project and is currently orchestrating the study. Scientific interpretation of the results from this study will take some time. Results and scientific findings will be published in the usual manner through a peer-reviewed process.

Q. Are you going to sell the results of this project to large pharmaceutical companies?

A. No. The results of this study are the intellectual property of the University of Oxford and the National Foundation for Cancer Research, who will make the scientific findings of this project available to the greater scientific community.

In Layman's terms F@H tries to find out what causes disease, if they can find out what goes wrong they can try and find a way to cure it, UD tries to find the cure by testing chemical reactions in search of a drug cure.

Also keep in mind that *so far* (I said "so far") all of stanford's results have been paper based, UD's results on the other hand are already in use in the real world. The results from the UD/Oxford Anthrax, and Smallpox projects have been handed over to U.S.A.M.R.I.I.D. and the C.D.C.

Each project has it's merits, each project has it's faults. It's best for you to decide for yourself which project you want to participate in.

Well thanks for all that info. Especially the tid bit about Moose's little tid bits. :D

Thanks for folding for Team 33! :)

That would be the important difference in my opinion.

I said I would get yelled at... seems every time I go over to grid.org they try selling me a cluster solution... :D

grid.org is their non profit side(servers, grid solution, and staff to run the project are donated by UD out of their own pocket).

Now the commercial side of UD sells the server and client software to companies to run *their own* projects on *their own* computers.

UD does not sell the results from the non-profit side(those belong to Oxford University and the N.F.C.R.), nor do the companies that buy their software get to use the computing power of the volunteers on the grid side

Also keep in mind everyone has to make money to survive in this world, actually if you really wanted to get technical UD makes money off of their software solution(not project related), however at the same time you could also say Vijay makes money off of F@H, it *could be said* that F@H is a means to the end to a secure tenure, tenure = job, job = money, project helps keep job, volunteers power the project, thus making him money.

The point is they are both very worthwhile projects with the same goal *finding cures* to horrible diseases, as I said before they both have merits and they both have their own flaws, arguing over semantics, stating one is better then the other, so and so *could be* making money..etc is really not helping either project all it does is start wars between the 2 project(s) volunteers.

Results from both projects are the property of very, very respected universities, both have the same goal, the betterment of mankind.

I'm a tool.

Well, if you say so.

I still find it interesting why 98.7% [H] is UD oriented (seems to be, a large majority). It's just a me thing, but I've always found this disparity of interest.

Is UD a larger program (more CPU's/more donors)? Looks that way if I read the stats right (?). 1.3 million members UD (what exactly is a member/members have > 1 cpu) vs. Stanford's 200,000 CPU's. Even if you count each CPU a member, UD still whoops Stanford is user base.

History at the [H] is I think the orginal Stanford was G@H (Genome at Home) and lots of folks got pissed off at Stanford. Some stuck with F@H (points zero'd, new clients etc) and some went to UD.

Which ever client you se, it still would be nice if we got some free prescription narcot....err drugs. It would certainly help every month when the power bill comes in. :D

Anyways, been folding for 4 years and I don't see myself quiting any time soon. Also see a big upgrade coming as well.....mostly just for more ppd.
