I am looking to upgrade the 4850 in my Shuttle XPC. Sadly, I am poorly versed in the current crop of low to mid level cards.

TIA,
david

I believe there is a single slot 460 in existence, there are 5770's (I own an XFX single 5770, extremely quiet). I think they recently came out with single slot 6850's as well. So I guess it's a matter of preference and needs.

I fit 2 dual slot 5770s in my shuttle box(although I can't use any PCI slots now). Temps aren't bad either(~50C idle). Are you sure you can't fit a dual slot card in there? A single slot 460 would be a good choice though.

Here's a couple reviews:

Seems like it runs hotter and quite a bit louder than a regular 460. So good performance, but not what I'd want in my HTPC.

I haven't been able to find a 6850 single slot review, though it seems they exist.
Here's some news releases:

Some versions don't have a 6pin PCI-E power connector and other versions do apparently. I'd get one with the power connector though so you could overclock it.

Sparkle made a single slot gtx570.. However im not sure if they ever released it or if it was just a prototype that never came out

Ya just googled.it.. Lots of articles.march 3rd and 4th but dunno of it was ever released

Yikes, that's a hell of a price hike on both. I'd say it's worth it to sacrifice the PCI slot and make whatever was running in it run off USB so you can buy a dual slot card.

Mr. K6,

The Shuttle box I am presently using has room for only one slot.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I don't know how big the psu is but its probably pretty low wattage in the shuttle, I would go with the 6850 if you were going to pick of the two.

Another idea is to get a waterblock and external pump so you can make any highend cards into a single slot.

I was looking at the wrong models then - what model do you have specifically? I think the PSU is also a legitimate concern here, so the specific model number would help clarify that as well.

I also used to have a shuttle G33, it has a standard 250W PSU(quality one). Unless you have upgraded the PSU a 5770 is as high as you can probably go in terms of power.

The PSU was upgraded to the 300W model. I had a 4870 hacked into it, and worked without so much as a hiccup. At this time, a simple closed, mobile box is preferable.

off the beaten path, but still relevant.

What is an advantage of the single slot cards over duel cards besides the size?

Doesn't matter. That 6850 is reference clocks and puts out less heat than the 460 while using less power not requiring a 6 pin pci-e power.

The absolute BEST single slot cards out are the new AMD Tesla cards.

You asked for best, not for affordability.
