I'm reading specifications of a Supermicro motherboard and at the storage part it says:

What exactly is SCU?
 
More or less Intel's C600 series chipsets have the ability to drive up to eight additional 3.0gbps SAS or SATA ports. There are a bunch of configurations of the SCU so you can have different capabilities, RAID levels and etc.
