what IS pump head?

ok, is pump head the total loop lenght or the maximum distance from the lowest point in your loop, to the highest point in your loop(vertically measureing only)

or have i got the COMPLETE wrong idea?

None of the above, yet all of the above :)

Read that linky provided for you, it should give you a better idea. In laymans terms, it is the ability of the pump to push against pressure...a good car analogy would be to compare pump head to torque.
