My 2x512 sticks of K HyperX 3200 are currently at 2.5-3-3-8, and with a multi knocked down to 9.0 to isolate RAM, I still can't seem to get beyond 203mhz FSB without memtest86 erroring out on me. Voltage for memory is currently 2.6, I tried bumping to 2.7 but still no luck, always at 204 mhz it isn't solid. Does this sound right? Is there anything else I can try? It seems as though this ram is holding me back quite a bit, and I've been hearing about this stuff usually being much more flexible. Ideas?

have u tried relaxing the timings? try bumping the ram voltage all the way to 2.8 or whatever your mobo has. i run 2.5-3-3-6 on some OCZ ram and it won't run on tight timings running at 450-466mhz unless i give it that much voltate or relax the timings.

i'm not too sure, but i remember when i was looking at ram, Kingston didn't seem to be real great for OC'ing compared to other brands.
 
that was also a year ago when ram faster than ddr400 was very expensive, but most ram should be able to run 1 grade higher, like 3200 should run at 3500, and 3500 should run at 3700 ect... i run pc3200 at pc3700 speeds.
 
Well, clearly my DDR400 being weenie; is barely pushing 404 mhz. Seems rather weak in my opinion. Kinda depressing about the Kingston prognosis, I was recommended it by many here. I'll give that extra .1 voltage a try and see what happens.
 
HyperX loves voltage. Feed it some high voltage and see how it scales. Might be compatibility issues with MOBO too.
 
Of which I'd like to ask, my NF-7S will let me boost up to 2.9. I've read 2.8 is a good place to stop, you think that last bit of boost is risky?
 
if u'r ram has heatspreaders you don't have to worry about it being unstable b/c of heat. many ppl (i will be one soon) do voltmods to the ram voltage to get up to 3.2v. this works very well on OCZ memory, not sure about others, but i have seen some crazy speeds run on v-moded OCZ.
 
What I'm worried about is it becoming melted b/c of heat...;) they came with the stock HyperX blue spreaders on them, but I have no idea how effective they are and I don't want to risk much until I can get some additional recommendations about where to stop with voltage.

Also, I'm very curious about doing some personal benchmark comparisons that will compare between my highest FSB/CPU speeds reached with lax timings versus those reached with aggressive timings. What software do you think is best to adequately detect performance differences in terms of gaming fps?
 
timings don't make that big of a difference, not noticable at all. i can bearly tell the difference on my system when running 2-3-3-6 and 3-4-4-8, which is the tightest and most relaxed timings i can get. when i run 2.85v to my ran the heatspreaders only become slightly warm.

as long as the ram will run at its rated speed u'r stuck with it, but might be able to convince where you bought it from that it does not perform stable unless you give it lots of juice.

i have some benchmark numbers from my experiences somewhere, i'll have to find them or just make new ones.
 
i just did some make shift benchmarks. each benchmark was run right after a reboot.


for the 290 fsb, i can run 2.75v but sometimes programs will crash even though i can pass mem-test, so i run 2.85 just to be extra sure.

(edit: if you have an 865 chipset MB w/ MAM, enable it, i went from MAM disabled w/ my ram at 456mhz, 2.5-3-3-6 to Mam enabled @456mhz w/ 2.5-3-3-7, both at 2.75v and my benchmark went from 4711 to 5035 int buff'd(top bar) and 4733 to 5030 Float buff'd, but i think MAM only works w/ u'r ram at 1:1.)

if i have nothing to do later i'll run a few with different timings running at stock speeds, 230fsb(ram@460), 250fsb(ram at 400mhz), and at 288(ram at 460mhz) fsb so you get an idea on how the CPU and FSB effect the ram, and keeping the ram at its rated speed and right below its max speeds i can achieve at 2.75v. the extra .1v allow me to go slightly further, but timings are relaxed somewhat.

try to relax your timings as much as possible and juice those suckers.
 
Thanks for the replies. I knocked those HyperX up to 2.9(bios allowed max) the other day, relaxed to 2.5-3-3-9, lowest preset timing setting, and Memtest would error and freeze around 416 mhz(208 fsb). Total crap

A little lost here, are you not running 1:1?

edit: I recently came across another potential issue mentioned in another forum: Has anyone had problems with their FSB being limited using dual channel ram versus single channel on nforce2 mobos? I'ma try moving my sticks around real quick and report..

230FSB 1:1 puts ram at 460mhz. (230*1 makes 230x2)
250FSB 5:4 puts ram at 400mhz. (250*4/5 makes 200x2)
288FSB 5:4 puts ram at 460mhz. (288*4/5 makes 230x2)
 
Gotcha.

So I decided to pull my multiplier back a little, even though total processor speed was under 2500+ stock, and that seemed to give me a tad more leway. Additionally, bumping the chipset voltage helped significantly, but I'm maxed on RAM and chipset voltage from the bios. I'm considering a voltage mod on that RAM, but I'm a tad worried about frying it. What is reasonable voltage for these two sticks? Also, why would chipset voltage help in this scenario?
