I have been hearing this a lot the last couple days when reading about the new Quad cores but I have no idea what it means. Is it particular to the quads or is it something the E6550 would have (just bought one this morning). I also noticed some of the prices going up on Intel CPUs today, wasn't there supposed to be a drop?
 
g0 stepping is the newest revision to the core 2 architecture and should result in the processor running cooler and taking less power. All of the new models have g0 stepping, and newly manufactured Q6600s will too. Prices are going up on some sites like Newegg because they're designed to automatically raise the price when a ton of people are buying something.
 
Its the latest stepping with lower wattage, better yields, better overclocks.

Ex:

Q6600 B3 stepping = 105 watts
Q6600 G0 stepping = 95 watts

I THINK the Q6700 dropped from like 130 watts to 115 watts with the change from B3 to G0.
 
I assume the stepping is noted on the core itself with everything else right? But does it say it anywhere else...like on the label on the box? I forgot to check the chip before I installed the HSF on it.

The box my chip came in (from mwave.com...ordered 7/21/07) has a "Pack Date" of "7/11/07.
 
Oh yea...I forgot about that program. I'll run it in a bit then...Windows is installing as we speak.

EDIT: I just ran it on my office computer...would it be the value for "Stepping" or "Revision." I ask that b/c the value listed for "Stepping" is only a single numeric character.
 
Using other CPU's as a base. What sort of improvement will we see with a 10w drop in power needs?

It should either state "B3" or "G0"
 
Darn...mine is B3.

Oh well...I can live with that though. :) I already notice a significant speed increase over my previous Athlon X2 3800+. :D
 
My office machine at work is a Pentium D 820 and my new Q6600 system is waaaaaaay faster. So yea...that would be a sweet upgrade for you.
