What is Frys? Ive googled it and all that came up was some ISP site. Some guy on these forums said that he saw a 9800Pro for only $189! Could someone give me a link?

It's a computer store. They do a lot of in-store specials that are really hot and they piss a lot of people off(like me) who don't have a frys around. I wish there was a frys around here. Actually I just wish there was a fucking computer store within half an hour of here.
 
Also Http://www.outpost.com , it is a big electronics store. I like going there, i usually buy accessories and stuff there, i usually buy all my real hardware online, but everything else i usually buy there. I used to drive to it like 2 times a week, when i was making good money.
 
Fry's is probably the best brick and morter computer / electronics store to have ever existed.

I used to take the 1 hour drive just to look around for deals. It is truely a "kid in a candy store" type of situation.

As of 2 weeks ago, they opened up one less than 10 miles from my house. That place will probably keep me broke for the rest of my life.
 
The closest Fry's is like 2000 miles from me.

But at least my state has one of the only 9 microcenters in the states (or some really small number). It's my favorite comp retail store; their employees actually know things!

Also, bobsaget, I think the Radeon 9800 Pro deal was only in store.
 
Just be careful when buying..... inspect the packaging to make sure it is actually new. Fry's is well known for their liberal return process and some people will take advantage of it and the next buyer suffers from fradulent returns. ;)
 
Yes, Fry's does have a sucky web site, they want you to buy from their stores and from Outpost.com, which they purchased.

They have pretty good deals on Motherboards and processors every week or so, and if you want to go down and get an idea of what something will look like or what size it is, they are good. They don't have the same selection in-store that say, Newegg, has online, but there is more selection than most mom and pops.

They also sell TV's and other consumer electronics, not just computer stuff

I swear to God I'm a Fry's junkie. :D

Every Friday morning when the newspaper comes out, I buy a copy just for the Fry's ad. The last two weekends they have been having some incredible sales, like it was Memorial Day or something. Then it's off to Fry's.

They aren't always the cheapest across the board (websites are often cheaper), but the stuff they have on sale just can't be beat. As DocFaustus said they are the best brick and mortar computer store on earth. They also have the best return policy of any computer store in existance.
 
Closest one here is in Nevada, guess I'll just have to go to Crap USA for emergency shit.
 
I got one a few miles away from where I live. And it's true about their return policy. You can return anything. That can be a good thing and a bad. Like last week, my friend and I took a trip down to my local Fry's and see if he can return his memory because it was crashing his computer and it had a lifetime warranty on it. He purchased it about 2-3 years ago from a Fry's at a different location, yet they still offered to replace the memory, get store credit or even cash back. Now that's good service. Just don't abuse it. ;)

The bad thing about Fry's is sometimes the products are returned items or refurbished one but if it doesn't work, return it! :D
 
I have two in my area (San Fernando Valley)... one in Woodland Hills (Alice in Wonderland theme) and one in Burbank (alien theme). I know there is one by my cousin's house in Phoenix, but never been in the place. What I don't buy at Newegg, I end up buying at Fry's.

How are the Fry's you guys have been to themed?

I've also got 2 in my general area, the one in Phoenix is basically a rat hole and I try to avoid it unless I have a specific reason. The salespeople there are also about as smart as dirt, so don't go to that one if you don't know exactly what you want. The other one is like an Aztec/Pyramid/Desert theme, and its about twice the size. The big one is about 45 minutes away from me, but the drive is completly worth it...
 
I never understood the themes...I've seen two egyptian ones, and an Aztec one, and another huge-ass Fry's didn't really have any theme, just a piano and a coffee place.

Sounds like me. I pick up the Dallas Morning News and go straight for the Fry's ad. God some of the deals just make sick. Cuz I don't even have money for the good deals. :(

When I did have money I got great deals on fans, cases, and other miscellaneous crap. they also have awesome deals on HDD. I love how you can be walking around in the middle or the Hard Drive section and sitting there right in the middle is 6 pack Coca-cola on sale. :rolleyes:

The one near me is cow themed. Looks like a ranch everywhere.
 
I hate fry's. they have rediculous prices, like a BBA 9800XT for $499.99! come on... they have NF7-S's for $120 and WD 36gb Raptors for $160... and no one speaks english there (at the Fremont CA store anyways)

That's why you watch for their sales. Their day-to-day prices on hardware are not cheap, compared to on-line. BUT, they have a much better selection than any other brick and mortar store. If you need something right now, odds are Fry's has it.

Have you been to the new Plano store yet? It's supposed to be very nice. The Irving store is beautiful, the Plano is supposed to be better.
 
The best thing about Fry's is the sales. Otherwise, I could care less for their regular prices and service. Especially with reselling returned items as new, etc. There's a thread going on about them in the [H]ot|DEALS forum right now, not too positive.
 
Its a real simple formula realy. The super stores play the numbers game.


They are overpriced on many things and they run ridulously low prices on a few select items occasionaly. The low prices create word of mouth and they dollar cost average thier inventory.

It has always amazed me how people will struggle over a 5 dollar bill on a 130 dollar item and yet they will spend 30 dollars on a 2 dollar item. Thats how those big stores make money. Phsychology at its best.

The customer has a hard on over saving 5 or 10 bucks on say this weeks special and has an orgasim then spends that ten saved and 40 more on 4 dollars worth of shit in the same store lol

Yeah the Plano store is layed out funny to me. I still like the store in Garland.

The prices are only good on Sale items. That's all I go in there for. Yeah the advice is crap. Don't listen to the employees.

Yeah there is a whole herd of full sized fake cows above the entrance way. Remember when they used to moo, the moo'ing must have gotten annoying cause they turned that crap off or it broke. The one in Arlington has no them, Houston's is Oil Industry themed and I've never been to Plano's or Irving's. Man it's nice to have 4 within 30 miles of me :D

the one in Plano is boring themed. White Brick and a red ceiling :rolleyes: .

But yeah... unfortunately I am going to school up in Montana so I am really gonna miss Fry's. :(
 
I have seen the Egyptian themed one, another one that may have been Aztec or something. The Sacramento store theme is "under construction" I believe; it sucks. The Fremont store is a tribute to electricity. It is my favorite because it sports a full size Tesla coil (1 million volts I believe) in the center of the store and a 12-15 foot Jacobs ladder on one wall.

Unfortunately, the new Concord store has absolutely no theme what so ever.

Fry's has awesome prices if you compare them to other brick and mortar stores. Of course, when you start hunting online, you will find better deals. Their sales are nothing short of phenomenal at times (see UT2K4 DVD SET for 14 bucks after 10 dollar rebate).

One of the best features of Fry's has to be their vast selection of components. They have every single resister, potentiometer, clip, etc. that you will ever need.

I still use Newegg for system builds and larger purchases. But for small buys, sales, and convenience of getting something immediately, I use Fry's.
 
Anyone been to the one in burbank? I went down there a while ago, biggest one I've been to, movie themed..Fry's has become my Toys' R Us...

The "Rat hole" used to be an Incredible Universe, back when Radio Shack thought it would get into big-box retailing with their Computer City and Incredible Universe concepts. Unfortunately, their business plan seemed to be "Lose a little money on each product, but we'll make up for it with VOLUME!" Needless to say, the concepts went bust and Radio Shack is back to selling things out of little store fronts.

The "Rat hole" actually used to be much darker inside, due to Incredible Universe wanted it dark for all the TV's and stuff. They replaced the lights a couple years ago and it's much brighter in there now, but there is not a theme for that store. However, you can still go in and pick up the $59 combo special, even if there isn't a giant Pyramid or Slot Machine to walk through. Yeah, went to the one in Vegas on the south end of the Strip a few weeks ago. Clean, decent, didn't spend much time there because, hey, It's Vegas, Baby!
 
Today is my "Fry's-Day", the San Jose Mercury News runs a big
ole ad with all of the specials.

I usually go to the one in Fremont, but I've been to 5 different
locations.

The closest is in Fremont. 15 minuets away is the San Jose
(Aztec) store, the next is the one close to AMD's head quarters
and coincidently the Kit Kat Klub (nudie bar!). The one in
Milpitas is horendously layed out and the new one in
Concord (went there yesterday) is layed out badly.

But if there was a place to chill for a few hours, any of us could
easily do so there. Browse their prices, read a ton of magazines
and refule at the cafe in the store.

But what I love to do the most is, when I buy something, I just
continue walking past who ever wants to see my reciept...

Frys is an odd odd company. For being a huge eletronics store their web prescene is pretty much null. As you can see they have a funky old html 3.2 site that refers to pretty much their limited ISP service. The outpost site prices are nothing to what you find in the warehouse.

They advertise in the newspaper in the area's that they are located. Think of the place like Costco, a huge warehouse that when they get a large shipment of something they sell it off at an insane price. They don't take american express, no matter how many people complain about it. They don't put their newspaper sales ads up online, no matter how many people request it.

Infact people have started sites like ( http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ ). Where they actually scan the newspaper ads.

Human power in the stores is used as much as possible. When something could be easyly automated, they instead have a highschool lacky standing there helping customers. It is actually a refreshing change of pace.

It is a company using an older business model and doing it successfully. It really is something to see.
 
They are building a new Fry's right by me. It's off interstate 355 in Downers Grove, Illinois. ill have to check it out when it opens.

I can't wait for that store to open. I drive past it everyday waiting for the Grand Opening sign to be put up. It's been a long time comming. I heard about it about a year ago.
 
I hate Fry's. Don't get me wrong, I used to love purchasing stuff from them back in the day. I was so pro Fry's because that was the store that introduced me to world of computer parts. So one day I needed a job, I drove down there and applied. After 3 sets of interviews and whatnot, I was hired. Worked there for 1 month and quit. Reason was because their ethics are whacked out. I feel as if I was conning people instead of helping them out. What a total junkyard.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. They have (or at least had) old convertibles set up like a drive-in theater where you can sit in the cars and watch old movies while you eat. :)

But I haven't been there for probably two years. There's nothing I really need desperately enough to drive that far and fight the crowds. I usually order from newegg or just go to the nearby Staples if it's not a high-ticket item I need fast.
