maybe this is the place to ask. if not sorry and please direct me to where i need to post.

What is folding? I see it around in forums and such but I have no clue what it is.
 
Folding@Home is the name of a distributed computing project a lot of us here participate in. It's run by Stanford University, and in a nutshell:

To study the way certain proteins behave (or "fold"), Stanford needs to run some very heavy duty calculations. In order to get these calculations done more quickly, they have volunteers install a small application on their PC's, and that application retrieves a chunk of a calculation that needs to be completed. The application then uses your processors unused cycles to solve the calculations, and then submits the completed work back to Stanford.

The research is helping to further the study many serious diseases. You can see some of the work being done here:

Folding is something that you should start doing in the next 5 minutes. :D
 
If you want to do similar work without babysitting your system or having to learn how to maintain it, you may even look into BOINC which has several projects to choose from and some of the choices also include protein research. POEM@Home and Rosetta@home (RALPH@home is the alpha test program for Rosetta if you want to run that one as well.).

Edit: It is also really simple to install and setup.
 
I will put in my 2 cents. Really, I don't think anyone can word it as well as it has been written on the webpage of Atlas Folder. Check out his page there.
