What is DSL?

I remember when DSL loosely meant digital satellite link, but that kinda died. I know of one person who had it, but I bet the majority of people you ask won't have even heard the term used that way.

Now it's digital subscribers line and it runs through your phone line. Technologically speaking I prefer it to Cable modem, but in many places they aren't marketing it with speeds to match Cable.

And DSL companies usually charge for every computer that will have access. If you use a router to split the signal, the speeds may decrease for each computer.

With cable, you can use a router and the speed is preserved for the most part.

Kinda sorta. The bandwidth on cable modems is regulated, you can't just use all the unregulated bandwidth on the local line. With DSL it's also locked, and you have your own individual line.

In either case, a router just shares the available bandwidth between the computers. At home I have DSL, at school I have cable in my apartment, aside from having a lower ping on DSL and faster transfer rates on cable, more computers sharing it means every other computer loses some available bandwidth. That's the same with both.
