What is DFI?

Could someone tell me what a "DFI mobo" is and how I know if my mobo is DFI?

Thanks in advance.

I thought it was a brand and then after telling someone what mobo I had "said I am not sure if that mobo is DFI, but if it is...". He made it seem like it was a component like AGP or pci-e.

having read your previous posts, I'm going to assume you've just built your first system, (which, judging by the specs should be providing more than enough performance), and other people in the forums are riding you to get a dfi motheboard for overclocking. The reality is if you get one you will probably be horribly lost in the various options.

sorry man I have a wife, and kids and I like to get laid. So I have to be able to talk about more then OC'ing my computer. But I am on here trying to learn. Yeah I just upgraded by PC to what I thought would be a good start for learning how to OC. The question of DFI came up in a post and the way it was stated made me have second thought about what I thought I knew.

Dont worry this wont be the last stupid question I ask.

Yeah I just built it. My first build from scratch. The motherboard came with the 7800GT, and all of the reviews talked about it being great for OC'ing. It was free so I am using it for now. To answer your question it is an Nvidia Nforce 4. Thanks for the reply.

I honestly don't see how I was being an ass hole. It's just usually when someone buys a motherboard, he knows what it is :p

But yeah man, look at it. If it's not there, I THINK that the ones that came with the 7800gt's are NOT dfi.

nvidia is the maker of the graphics card, and chipset, and nforce 4 is the chipset. You probably have the evga motherboard that came with the graphics card correct?

nf4 sli isnt the mobo you have.

Yeah that is the one I have. Not the one I planned to get orginally but it was free so I thought I would try it out.

Then your motherboard is eVga. DFI is just a different brand :)

the evga boards are rebranded something or other, I forget what.

edit: nm, a quick google turns up Jetway 939GT4-SLI as what they are.

Its actually not a bad board at all. Its not all hardcore like the DFI, but in many cases thats a good thing, took me a week and a pair of new RAM sticks to get my DFI working as it should.

Ok that is what I thought. Hmmm wonder why he worded it the way he did. Oh well now I know I am not as clueless as I thought.

yeah. the anandtech review was pretty good from what I remember. hell, I cant say anything, my motheboard was $70. I dont believe in these excessively priced boards. DFI's new $300 wonderboard makes me laugh.

Nice to see the community is so open and willing to answer honest questions

Well, if these polite and considerate people have not made it clear, DFI is actually a company that makes motherboards. Your motherboard is manufactured by Jetway, another company. eVGA, the company whose video cards you own, bought several Jetway motherboards, gave them a new color scheme, and slapped the eVGA logo on them. nForce4 SLI is the chipset that runs your motherboard, not the actual motherboard itself.

Hope that cleared everything up. :)

lol...Yes it cleared up a couple questions. I have posted many question on here, and this board is awesome. Thanks to everyone for their time.

Ok now how do I know if my computer is turned on? ;)

Wow, I was looking at a DFI LanParty Ultra board for my new rig, but this thing seems to be just what I need. I'll be running the exact same setup as PhxGuy520, just 2GB of Mushkin XP4000 Xtreme Performance Black Series instead. Awesome!

Unless the imminent release of 7900s changes my mind on the card...

stick your finger in the fan. if it doesn't hurt a lot, the computer is off :p :D :D

Or take off the hsf.. if you smell something burn within a few seconds, it is on(or was...)

or if it hurts alot your not very tolerant to pain :p

i was downloading some huge demo off some slow crappy site, actually i think it might have been some old abandonware game like almost a year ago and i wouldnt turn my computer off and a fan fell off while it was on 0_0 (this was shortly after i had gotten all pisse dand COMPLETELY redone my system post PSU death so yea...) and well i had to hook everything back up while it was ON and i got one of them nice big emo style cuts across my arm :p fan worked though :p everything was cool :p

and that says nothing for a dead fan eclipse :p

And dont worry about the lack of knowledge man, i used to not know the difference between an AGP slot and a PCI slot 0_0 and that was... like 3 years ago? now im a winchester voltage whore :p eclipse knows what im talking about still i think :D

...and I like jetway. they make some pretty stable boards. cheap like ECS and there have been some VERY nice boards come out that company.

you can do some moderate OCing too with these boards..albeit not the best but some.

Actually depending on the fan it can hurt like hell. I took off the tip of my finger with a delta 80mm.

wtf does that have to do with anything? your kids and you like to get laid? Do you think that excuses you from shopping around to find the best purchase for your hard earned thousands? I, for one, would have bought DFI if I wasn't so interested in my 32.

yea but not all of us own (high speed) deltas :p and in cases like those, i think the table saw like whine would give some, atleast tiny hint that you shouldnt touch it :p

SO I read through about half the thread, seems like no one posted the link for the DFI Forum

great support site, admin'ed by an DFI Employee aka Angry_games
I can be found on dfi-street using my same- phelan1777

Maybe you could post why the board is 300$.

The board is basically a modded version of the DFI-Expert, just with aluminum diodes instead of their normal parts, as to make the board more tolerant of overclocking= more stability. Only 1000 of the Venus boards are rumored to be made, and with that a special "box" as the joke goes to bury the board when you kill it :-P.

There are no reviews of it as of yet at DFI-street but they should be coming soon.
many of us @ DFI-street are waiting to see if the board is worth the cost.

Huh? When did I say i didnt shop around???? Just becuase I gave a free mobo a chance, I am blowing thousands. BTW I only spent $600.

My point was I thougth the dude was being an asshole (but I think/hope we are cool now) cuz I asked what he thought was a stupid question. I was simply pointing that althought I trying to educate myself my family will always come first.

So you tell me why should I have ran right out and bought a DFI? Instead of giving this one a chance. It got really good reviews.

Thanks man. I am not worried about it. I am sure there are many things outside of hardware that I could school the most hardware savvy people on. We each have our own areas of expertise. I probablyI just took the guys response the wrong way. Maybe losing a crap load of money in vegas put me in a bitchy mood. :)

I think I made a good upgrade choice on the feedback of the good people of this forum, and I look forward to getting more knowledge from you guys in the future.
