What is a solid everyday overclock for 3930k

Now that I have my computer up and running with no freezing issues. I have started to overclock. This is my first time overclocking and so far all I have done was change the multiplier to 40. I have not had any problems, and its been easy so far, but was wondering what speed I should be looking for as a good setting for gaming and everyday use. I just want to set it and leave it.

is 4 ghz a good overclock?
 
For a 3930k one could get a stable 4.7ghz. You made no mention of your cooling setup so I can't comment on what you could get.

Sorry I thought I had it in my sig. I have an H80. If I could get a stable 4.7 would it be a bad idea to leave it at that clock all the time?

If you can get it stable, it's fine.
 
Well, 4.7ghz stable 24/7 depends on a number of factors. First, I might be more comfortable with a h100 push/pull vs h80 to see those speeds. Second it depends on your chip, not all chips OC the same. I know of a number of people who run 4.7ghz 24/7 at temps maxing out at 60-70C on load with extreme cooling. On an h80 I might recommend 4.5ghz if you can get a stable setup.
 
Ok I guess i should give it a shot and see how high I can get stable. Since this is the first time I have overclocked anything I will ask for some advice. All I have read basically says go to the bios and up the multiplier by one and try it. If it works then try it again until it doesn't work. then up the voltage a little bit and try again, once that doesn't work then go into the bios and and put it back to the last one that worked and that is all you have to do. does this sound oversimplified?

Also what if i dont want to mess with the voltage can I just leave this in auto?
 
4.5 is right in the sweet spot. Take it from me. I've ran both 4.5 and 4.7 and 5.1 and of all three the best bang for the power for the performance is 4.5. Lower voltage, lower wattage, and about as high as practically noticeable as you can get with these. Anything higher is just bench queen numbers.
 
Well I guess everything is working fine. Moved the multiplier to 45 and left everything else in Auto except I disabled the Turbo Boost. Computer booted up and runs games fine. I also increased the H80 to the highest profile to help with the temperature. So I guess everything is good to go. Thanks for the Tips!
 
I don't have the CPU you have, wish I do..but you may get better temps if you are able to have two fans on the radiator of the h80, one pushing air on one side and the other on pulling air out of the radiator on the other side (hence push/pull). Temps tend to be better that way for marginal increase in noise and potentially greater increase in overclock.

Corsair H80 push \ pull fan set up @ 4.7 ghz? Why not?!.. AS LONG AS!.. your 24/7 OC temps doesn't
get passed 80 degrees or higher, any temps you get below it are all ok. IF.. your OC temps reaches 80
degrees or higher even though you are not using multi-threaded applications, your processor's life is in
great danger and very soon (with long continuous use) you'll end up frying it big time AND the worst is,..
IF you run a multi-threaded application (knowing your OC temps are not good even on non multi-threaded
apps) surely your OC temps will skyrocket way way passed 80 degrees, its only a matter of time your
processor will break down...

- OC'ing to 4.7ghz and comparing it to 4.5 the difference are only in benchies numbers, in real world use it
makes no noticeable difference except OC'ing to 5ghz, for that, you have to upgrade your CPU cooler to a
more efficient one. At those OC levels (5ghz or higher) you can only achieve it 24/7 under 80 degrees
by using hi performance water cooling setup.
 
ok i did a few things checked around and tried some tests to see if its stable.

prime95 @ 4.5 ==> Crashed BSOD
Intel Burn Test @ 4.5 ==> Crashed System Unstable

decided to try 4.2

Intel Burn Test @ 4.2 ==> System Stable
