what is a preamp?

i searched in google and howstuffworks.com to no avail. what is the difference between an amp and a preamp? also do you use the two simultaneously? or only one or the other? and also what is the benefit of a preamp?

Preamp = Before the amp.
Remember they have to keep the names simple so audiophiles can figure them out. ;)

Very high end amplifiers just do one thing.... amplify the signal. ;)
Can you guess why they call them that? :D

What does the preamp do?
It provides the volume control, source switching, level matching and other stuff like a phono stage.

pre-amps usually deal with line level signals.... such as your computer output, cd play, minidisk, etc... all a pre-amp does is boost the signal to make is louder, and sometimes cleaner.... so if an input of anything (mixer, reviver, guitar amp).... has a preamp that means you can control that input without having to change the master volume..... its the reason why mixers work.... .
