what is a pelter?

Its a really cool ceramic plate that you put between your processor and heat sink. You hook it up to the power supply, it takes about 115+watts. It takes all heat from one side, and makes that side quite cool. The other side gets proportionally hotter. I turned a heatsink upside down once and placed a peltier on it. In my garrage, I froze water on it, quite cool. I then proceeded to kill my computer somehow though:'(

Yeah, I've got tons of questions just like this (Noobie Qs) It'd be nice if this place had a working search function.

I have a pair of them that I picked up at EPO a year or so ago; I've been wondering as of late whether peltiers have a temp. range that they can cool (say, drop 25 deg. F one side and raise equal amt. on opposite) or whether they can cool a certain amount (say, cool anything to 50 deg. F assuming an infinite heat sink to draw away all extraneous heat)? Any clarification would be helpful, as it'd be helpful to know for a project I've had in mind for awhile :)

Thanks!

They have a maximum difference in temperature between the two sides. Lets say dTmax (temp difference) is 60C, then as long as you keep the hot side at 60C the cold side should stay at 0C. That is at optimum conditions though, ie the proper power supply, and steady state loading (possibly zero heatload, I don't know for sure).
