My friend might buy a new PC and he needs to know what people think about IGP gaming, he doesnt have the cash to spend on a 100$ or less VC, so heres the setups i thought of to choose from, he'll be playing games once a week like HL2 on low obviously:

P4 Celeron 2.93GHZ
Sapphire 9100IGP Chipset
2x256 Geil Value in Dual

AMD Sempron 754 1.6GHZ 256kb L2
ECS K8M800 w/ S3 UniChrome II Graphics
2x256 Geil Value in Single

P4 Celeron D 335J 2.8GHZ
ECS i915GV w/ Graphics Media Accelerator 900
2x256 Geil Value in Dual

Athlon XP 2700+ 333
Chaintech 7NIL NF2U w/ GF4MX 440 IGP
2x256 Geil Value in Dual

Definitely the last option because it has athlon xp processor which will beat everything on the list. And it has the best video card on the list. Except Radeon 9100 is good too but the celeron will hurt you.

Why, the athlon seems like a dead-end to me, with it being phased out and all, this rig needs to last at least 2 years....Are the celerons THAT bad? ive never bought one, hehe. The GF4 MX was a crappy series, i dont see how it would excel...

S3 and Graphics Media Accelerator will not play HL2 at all. HL2 were test on geforce 4 mx. Celeron is that bad. If you want gaming performance. You either have to go with real athlon or pentium 4 processor. Not Sempron/Duron or Celeron. You gave 4 systems on list and thats the best system that will handle hl2 best. But still, I would spend extra money to get faster system.

wait hold on this is ridiculous i can build a decent gaming pc for about $500 what kind of budget is he working with?
i suggest a
2.8ghz celeron d 335 $98
2x512mb cheapass ram $80
52xcd-rw $22
bobo case with psu-$20
cheap prescott ready mobo $38 (it wont oc but ittl work)
and a 6600gt agp $184
total is like $460 (i configure somthin similar on newegg.com)

If that top Celeron is a Celeron D, then don't listen to the n00bs, it'll be the fastest out of all the systems listed.

If not, get the last system, but not with that motherboard (Stable, but no overclocking options available to it.) Get the MSI K7N2GM-V.

The athlon will kill the celeron in performance... they are very crippled for any sort of gaming application.

The Athlon will destroy it. Kill. :)

If you are worried about upgrability, get a cheap socket 754 mobo, and put a Sempron 2500+ (essentially a AthlonXP) then, later he can upgrade to a A64 when he has the money.

Depends, Northwood-based celeron... you're right
However, Prescott-Based Celeron D... you're extremely wrong

SiS Chipset?
ExcelStor hardrive?
No-Name company RAM?

You're begging for trouble, aren't you?

Yes, it is an S478 Celeron D..

Pressy core....

how about these two i just put together in my head:

Sempron 1.75 GHZ Socket A
NF2 Ultra
2x256 Geil Value in Dual
AGP 8X ATi 9550

or

Celeron D 2.8 (insted of 2.93)
915GV Mobo with GMA900
2x512 Value Ram in Dual

Why not the Celeron D 2.93 on the IGP9100 board? That would be the most ideal system.
Celeron D 478, I mean.

Ide rather not use two year old technology if i dont have too, IE my woes about the AXP Sempron, the 9100IGP board doesnt even have SATA, its a total dead-end upgrade-wise.

You dont think an AGP 9550 would excel anymore than the IGP's?

i didnt say this system would be an awesome overclocker but with everything at stock those components should hold up perfectly. Im sorry but i would never tell someone on a budget to sacrifice getting a good video card and cpu for getting a name brand hdd and mobo

The Celeron D is a fairly recent technology, it's the best choice out of all the CPUs listed... as for SATA... no big loss, unless you're getting i865/875/9XX you're only going to be riddled with problems.

As for the AGP9550, yes, it would out-perform it, but as a whole it's not worth the extra money.

dude the system i just configured for you would rock for most games (even at medium settings) if you had $800 then we could really make a nice system minus foxxconn and other crap manufactures but to tell you the truth for $35 that as fast as your gonna get.

i cant believe you guys would say a system with integrated graphics and an athlon can compete with a celeron D and a 6600gt for the same price

In the last week, I bought:

Barton 2500+ w/nforce2 mobo $71 shipped - in FS/FT
512mb pc3200 $40 shipped - newegg
ti4200 - $43 shipped - ebay
case and 300w psu - $25 shipped - ebuyer.com
12x dvd+-rw - $35 including tax - staples b&m
60gig 7200rpm hd $20 - from a friend

total for complete system...$234

just shop around a little bit, you can easily put together something that will handle most of today's games without any trouble. even with your budget, you could upgrade a few of my components above for an even better system for your friend.

Then your priorities are off-focus.
The video card and CPU are the very last things you put in a PC. A non-name-brand HDD is asking for a list of problems (Data Corruption, Drive Failure, Poor RMA service), not to mention a SiS-chipset motherboard? Come on, you've been on these forums long enough to recognize all of the faults SiS-chipsets have.

Im aware of what im gonna get. No name brands and exelolstore are on my 'dont buy' list. Along with Sis and those other weird things.

so your saying that it would be better to get a $100 asus board and a $60 20gb maxtor drive and use integrated graphics than to go with a ceap foxxconn or pcchips mobo and an mdt or cheaper hdd and a 6600gt and a celeron d? unless your overclocking highend motherboards arent allways need and your right about the hdd the only reason i selected that hdd was because i didnt feel like leaving newegg to search for parts but i bought a 100gb mdt for $55 about three moths ago so he shouldnt have a hard time finding them.

Ok heres the final setup methings, this has the best price/performance for him:

2.8ghz Celeron D S478
Sapphire 9100IGP mobo
512MB Wintec AMPO ram
80GB EIDE HD
52x/16x CDRW/DVD Rom
Foxconn mATX case
KB/Mouse/Spkrs

Not at all, you don't need a $100 Asus Board, but a good CHIPSET is necessary. I also wouldn't touch Maxtor either, they also have a large track record of dead drives, WD (Your MDT is basically a WD), and Seagate are the only drives I'll use now, not only by reputation, but because of my own personal Deathstar 40GB and My Maxtor 200 and 250GB drives dieing on me. Also, an 80GB seagate 2MB 7200RPM drive is only $60... it's extremely hard to say no to that deal. I'm not suggesting that the motherboard is good for overclocking (though it is) I'm just saying that the performance loss, and a chipset known to have been riddled with problems is NOT the way to build a system.

That's absolutely ideal, and if he needs it he can easily upgrade to a more capable video card (key: If he needs it) without losing anything else. Not only that, but it's a fairly solid platform.

edit: what type of HDD are we looking at? Link?

well hes not going to be playin hl2 with any bit of eye candy with an igp 9100...i swear you can do better than that.

PurpleSaurusRex said:
get the celeron d 2.66 instead of the 2.8, they both overclock to the same figure.

not a bad idea, here, any money you save is money put towards a dedicated video card.

cell_491 said:
or even a 2.4 as long as its a celeron D

Truth

I think a 2.4 is pushing the limits, 2.4 is 400mhz less, and hes not OCing at all, and 400mhz is a wee bit to lose. I thought of the 2.66, but hes already going one step down from the 2.93, so at that standpoint, the 2.66 is a big downgrade, just like the 2.8 to 2.4 type of deal.

the HD is a western digital, im not retarded :p

412 is alredy too much, when the P4 system will do his needs for 375

P4? or celeron, because wouldn't a AXP 2700+ out preform a celeron ~2.4-2.8GHZ, I think so.

A Celeron, yes. Celeron D, absolutely NOT. A Celeron D 340 outperforms a 2600+ Barton in most tests, let alone a T-Bred.

and keybaord mouse w/e you want

TOTAL $459 w/o keyboard and mouse. with it is $10 keybaord and $30 mouse. He doesn't need too much more. Tell him to wait. It WILL be worth it. BTW That mobile chip will OC to near 3200+ not sure if it will with that mobo but ti should be a good stable mobo. It has NF2 which is a good chipset. The vid card will play HL2. My fried did until he got his 6600gt. that monitor willl be sufficient. The ram is of better quality then mine and wil run in dual. The harddrive is fast enough for gmaing. overall not a bad setup.
