I've ordered a Q6600 G0 eventhough I'm perfectly happy with my 3.2GHz @1.30V E6420. What are the chances that I can OC the Q6600 to 3.6GHz @1.35V max? I guess that I could drop the multi to 8x and still run 1600MHz FSB if 3.6GHz @1.35V is not possible.
 
My Q6600 is unstable at 3.6GHz @ 1.35v. It's 24 hour prime stable at 1.39vc and above. So don't count on it, but you might get lucky. Regardless, it's a quad and a decent upgrade to the E6420.
 
Depends how much your G0 wants to overclock, mine is stubborn as hell, it won't go higher than 3.4 with 1.6volts
 
My E6420 is really a nice chip, I managed to get up to 3.2GHz without breaking a sweat and I've never pushed it to the limit yet. I don't really like to OC especially with odd CPU/RAM/FSB speed but since my mobo supports up to 1600MHz and I can use 1:2 RAM divider, I just leave it that way, I hope that my Q6600 would also be that easy. Well if I can't get 3.6GHz, I think that 3.2GHz would also be good right?
 
Mine would boot up @ 3.8 on my ultra 120 x, and it was 24/7 prime stable @ 3.675.

It may do that, but the temps aren't gonna be the best.
 
i also just ordered a q6600 but unlike any of u i wont be pushing to its limits (of course i will see where it hits a wall at) but im gonna back it off back to 3.2 or so and let it sit there

(current cpu is a opteron 175 worst OCing high end cpu ever)
 
Higher voltage=higher temp right? I could get away with the high temp with my TR Ultra 120 Extreme but I'm not comfortable with more than stock voltage so I would just stick to the highest nice looking clock at stock voltage.

Btw can I just swap my E6420 with the Q6600 because I know that I can't just swap a single core to a dual core CPU and expect XP to support it right away but I don't know how is it when I go to quad from dual core.

If its a mistake,caNcel your order now,and save your cash.I would not be buying a q6600 now,but wating until jan and then grab a Q9300/9450,ETC...


As to my own OC,3.45Ghz is possible and stable,but case temps and cpu temps go a lil high (78c) I

I settled for 3.16Ghz for a while with a passive oc,and lower volts (but had a much better ventilated case at the time),but my temps were still nuts.Now I am running @ 3.06Ghz with a Scythe 800rpm 12cm fan with 1.285 vcore.

Mid Nov I am going to go back to using a higher speed fan on this U90i,and see if I can get 3.33Ghz without crazy temps.At 3.06 I see loads around 72c with p95 blend.
 
I'm prime stable (24hres) @ 3.6 with 1,50625(Bios) /1,376 (Windows). Ambient temp: 20-21C. Load temp: 60-61.

IIRC there is only different HAL's for single and then multi-core/dual processors. Your E6420->Q6600 should be fine from that perspective.

I'll agree with this. Technically you should be fine as long as you started with an SMP aware HAL.
 
My G0's a little bit of a whore... I had to pump in 1.5v before I got any stability at 3.6. This is with the Ultra 120 Extreme with a Scythe mounted on board.
I'm settling on 3.2, since well, that's damn fast enough for me.
 
Got my G0 today, so far so good, I could boot into Windows even at 3.6GHz @1.31V (1.35V Bios) but it is not Orthos stable. Up until now I'm running at 3.2GHz @1.31V (1.35V Bios, 1.272V Load) and it has already done 3hrs 15mins without error and temp at 33C in Speedfan(+15c = 48C). I don't know maybe I'll keep it at 3GHz with 333x9 instead of 400x8.

Just curious? Are you noticing much of a performance increase with the Q6600 over the E6420?

For a normal usage, I don't even notice much difference between the Q6600 and my 2.0GHz X2. However sometimes I need to use multiple programs at the same time and the Quad is faster but I did use a program called setaffinity to manually assign a program to a specific core, if I don't do this, the quad is not really much faster than my E6420.

I also am using the stock cpu fan/heatsink... and would like to do a moderate overlock like you are doing at 3.0 ghz. What system board do you have? I have the Gigabyte P35-DS3R.... what steps did you take to overclock the cpu?
 

I remember there being a post about this that exact situation (going from C2D to C2Q). From what I remember you may have to go into the device manager and see if it recognizes all four cpus as Q6600. From what I remember people where seeing that device manager saw two of the old dual core cores (two E6400's for example) and 2 Quad core cores (2 Q6600 cores). If you get that situation just remove the two dual core cores and then either scan for hardware changes or restart the computer (I would do a restart to be safe). So that should about answer your question.
