So what happens when you run out of drive letters from having too many hard drives (network drives too)? c - z for hdds, what happens after z?

Your sh#t out of luck as they say.

Honestly you should never really get to the limit. Either unmap some drives, RAID some drives, or upgrade to bigger drives to take the place of multiple smaller ones.

You also can mount the drives to a directory instead of a drive letter in the disk management area.

I'm curious about that as well ... except in Linux

What happens after hdz or sdz?

You can mount harddrives or luns under folders in NTFS.

As far as linux is concerned it starts numbering past sda/hda like sdaa/hdaa

I ran out of letters on a lot of occasions, so I was forced to mount under other directories. Now I'm on raid, so much better :D

No, he was just messing with you.

Yes, really., You can mount disks in a subfolder within another drive. You have to covert both drives to dynamic, however. Can't do it with basic disks.

You do not need to convert the drives to dynamic to do a folder mount. They can be done with just basic disks.
