Every now and then we hear of the sad demise of some poor ill fated [H]ard working chip that gave it it's all for some beastly demanding OverClocker with a whip.
My question is, If I were to mistreat my chip in such a reckless,cruel and inhuman fashion and it should up and die, will it take my data on the HD with it out of revenge?
Or can I just plop in another chip and start again?

CPUs are like women... costly, but able to be replaced...

No it's just that I have a friend that's a cronick abuser of chips and he's afraid that I will loose all my HD data should the chips go down.
 
It depends if you have an AGP/PCI lock when overclocking, if no then you can corrupt your hard drive but killing a CPU is probably beyond that. Other wise I can see no way really to kill the data unless your CPU cought everything onfire and god decided to smite you for your inhumanity ;) .

The only time I ever corrupted data on a disk is when I cranked the FSB up too far and didn't notice I sent the PCI bus to 41Mhz+
 
Not from just a CPU dying. Now like ppl have mentioned, if you're FSB is too high, it may corrupt a windows installation (and whatever you happen to be working on), however even then, you're limited to corrupting everything in your page file and windows only. So you should be pretty safe.
 
All the data thats on your hard drive, is on your hard drive. Your cpu will not interfere with it. Somethign similar happened to me before, but that was with my old crappy computer, it wasnt because i was oc'ing.

It would be safer to OvClk by just using the multiplier no?
 
Wont harm your data.Only running your periphs out of speed will do that for ya.
 
Stop the cycle of violence, if you abuse your CPU when he is young, when he grows up he will abuse his CPU and so on and so on..

If your CPU is giving back bad data (not just dead, but kinda running) then it can corrupt your data, but If your CPU passes things like Prime95 and other tests, it is not likely to affect the data on your drive.

The CPU either works, or it doesn't It can work at slower clock speeds, but the CPU itself can't really distort information, just processes it (hence the name...)

Running the FSB higher without the AGP/PCI lock however can run the hard drive channels at a different speed distorting and corrupting data.

It can process the information incorrectly :) which would in turn corrupt your data.
 
Very true, especially when overclocked. Then your computer can become unstable and freezes. There's your corrupted data.

Just make sure your board has a VERY DAMN GOOD AGP/PCI lock on it and you should be good to go, you would have to get a horrific, unimaginably bad math error in order to corrupt data on your HD, so I wouldn't worry about it.

That said, why aren't you keeping backups of your vital stuff!!!

A PCI/AGP locking feature either works or it doesn't. I'm not sure what a 'very damn good agp/pci lock' is other than one that works at all ;)

What some of the others have said is correct. Generally speaking you won't corrupt your data by frying a CPU. What was not mentioned specifically was that running your RAM too high can also cause data corruption; not just running your disk controller too fast.

it may not be common, but it happened to me. :(

that being said, i have another machine that has been running with half of it's processor cache MIA for months, and the drive is still pretty clean of errors, and the overall machine can do better than 12 hrs of prime and as much memtest as i care to run.

be carefull, though: if that CPU calls an abuse hotline on you, you're in for some BIG trouble.

As others have said, yes it can give back bad info.

This is why after every increase in overclock, you need to run Prime 95 to see if it still knows how to do math, or if it gives back errors.

If you don't take care of your CPU, then one day you may coe home and see the HSF on the desk and the socket empty, along with missing RAM modules...

THey have gone into hiding in shelters for overclocked and abused components...you'll never find them, they have gone on to a better place where hopefully they can start anew with people who will treat them right...

Learn to respect your hardware son, or you'll wake up one day and it will be gone. There are places you can seek help from...COCA (computer o.c. anonymous) and HAPP (Habtitual Abusers of PC Peripherals).
 
the safest way to OC is to not OC.

failing that, you test for stability every couple of weeks, to make sure that everything is in good health, you monitor your temps, and have things set up so that everything shuts off if they get too hot, you lock you AGP and PCI clocks, you don't volt things up super high and you keep backups of your important data.

FSB overclocking is FAR more benificial to performance, even if is strains more components at once.

i don't think that you are running the risk of a LARGER failure, but there are more individual parts involved that COULD fail.

if you overclock, you're taking chances.

you try to minimize your risks, you try to set up failsafe procedures, but if the worst happens, and you cook some of your hardware, you analyze what went wrong, and you try not to make the same mistake again.
 
So when it does finally give up after all the abuse are there any warnings or does it just give up and quit?

Happened to me too. My 3700+'s memory controller can only handle up to 230-240HTT, then it will corrupt a windows file, forcing me to reinstall windows. This has happened 3 times.
